Associate Scientist

Position Summary: This is an entry level research position in hair color formulation This position will require a motivated individual that demonstrates strong collaboration and communication skills. Daily activities includes researching raw materials, bench formulation work, analytical instrumentation, analysis and stability work on hair color formulations This testing includes standard test methods and evaluation of performance of hair color attributes. Also responsible for data entry, documentation and informing appropriate personnel of critical issues when necessary. Will interact directly with chemists, technicians and management.

Job Description:

  • Carry out formulation using new ingredients to demonstrate preliminary viability of new ingredients, protocols and technologies, and monitor the stability of such formulas

  • Assist in development of prototype formulations with appropriate R&D product formulator(s)

  • Coordinate product testing by preparing samples for various labs such as safety, microbiology, and claims, and organize the data obtained from such testing

  • Maintain a detailed laboratory notebook that documents progress of experiments and projects.

  • Provide written and graphical summaries of your methods, results and conclusions on a consistent basis.

  • Research and source novel raw materials and technologies that meet Aveda's mission

  • Interact with external departments (Marketing, PD, QA, Education) when necessary

  • Learn and be able to use computer systems available to R&D for formula and data management, requesting tests

  • Various lab duties including housekeeping and supply maintenance

  • Other duties may be assigned


Minimum Education Level: University Degree (BA

or BS) in Chemistry or related field

Additional Job Specifications:

Ability to learn operation of scientific instruments and applicable

software. Follow Good Laboratory

Practices and other regulations where applicable. Will also be required to run wet chemistry /

physical attribute tests. Good scientific

knowledge is required. Position requires excellent communication skills to

discuss and/or explain test results to management. Proficiency with typical office software required.

Formulation experience preferred.
