The central procurement team is based out of Banner's Support Services site in Chandler, and is a growing team responsible for generating medication procurement based savings across the entire Banner system – both inpatient, outpatient, and retail. Over the next year, this role will be instrumental in working to deploy new and innovative technology aimed at aligning purchases, streamlining the purchasing process, and saving Banner money.

Job Summary

The focus of this position is to identify and implement cost savings opportunities throughout the Banner system. These opportunities could come in the form of package sharing, increased contract compliance, ordering the price-optimal products, etc. This position will provide oversight and direction to the buyers at the facilities on coordinating on pharmaceutical purchasing and centralization during drug shortages and will help guide buyers on developing and implementing standard processes.


Essential Functions

  • Assists buyers across the system with product and/or NDC conversion opportunities to target cost savings, contract compliance, waste reduction, and improved pharmaceutical management. This position will be responsible for analyzing procurement reports across the system and working with buyers on conversion opportunities.

  • Provide central oversight and control over pharmaceutical purchasing. This position will help to direct purchasing, manage day-to-day purchasing decisions for cost savings, and provide oversight and management for all sources of medication procurement.

  • Provides expertise in system inventory management tools and practices. This position will help to coordinate purchasing and movement of pharmaceuticals during drug shortages and work with the facilities to assess needs and current inventory position.

  • Identifies and coordinates package sharing of slow moving and/or high cost pharmaceuticals. When a cost-savings opportunity is found to exist, this position will be responsible to work with the identified facilities to distribute right-unit-of-measure pharmaceuticals, thereby reducing the risk of waste and overall inventory.

  • Monitors reverse distribution reporting to identify opportunities for inventory management opportunities. This position will work with the facilities to strategize on methods for waste reduction.

  • Participates in the development and education of standard processes for the buyers across the system.

  • Works closely with Banner Compounding Pharmacy to help manage inventory and production to meet facility needs. This could involve assisting with product repackaging.

  • Minimum Qualifications

    Pharmacy technician licensure in the state of practice (where applicable) required.Pharmacy technician certification required.

    Must demonstrate knowledge of pharmacy inventory and supply procurement and management as typically attained through 3+ years experience performing in a pharmacy supply coordinator or buyer role. Must also have proven experience working with automated technology systems related to pharmaceutical management. Must possess good organizational, problem solving and computer skills. Must demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills, problem solving, and conflict resolution of the pharmacy department.

    Must have knowledge of computer software, particularly medication management information system software, Microsoft applications and automated dispensing systems.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Previous experience as Pharmacy Technician in a hospital pharmacy practice preferred.

    Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
