Summary of Position:

The Infection Prevention Manager is responsible for the effective direction, management and operation of the infection prevention and control/epidemiology department, including education of hospital personnel and consultation with the organization, CDC, and the county and state health departments. The responsibilities encompass compliance with Joint Commission (JC) standards, CMS, OSHA, and state regulations, outbreak investigation, and overall direction of the infection prevention and control program.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelors Degree in nursing, public health, epidemiology, clinical laboratory science, medical terminology or related field required.
  • Masters Degree in nursing or related field preferred

Experience:

  • Minimum two (2) years supervisory and/or management experience required.
  • Minimum five (5) years previous Infection Prevention Manager experience preferred

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills necessary to interact in a professional manner with customers.
  • Demonstrates leadership, creativity, and management skills.
  • Ability to read, analyze, interpret contracts, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports and other forms of correspondence. Ability to effectively present verbal and/or written information. Ability to respond to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to apply mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, rates and proportions to practical situations. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical tools for analysis and problem solving. Ability to create and interpret various charts and graphs to present in understandable format.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs).
  • Advanced computer and systems competency in the following areas: Enters data, retrieves data, assembles and organizes data, uses and analyzes data. Integrates diverse sources of data. Familiar with CDPH standards, CMS conditions of participation, JC standards and medical/legal concepts in regard to healthcare data. Knowledge and skills of applying quality improvement tools and techniques including statistical process control.

Certifications/Licensure:

  • CIC Certification required
  • Current CA RN license preferred

Essential Functions

  1. Provides consistently exceptional care at all times.
  2. Serves as facilitator, educator, resource for leadership and staff relating to Evidence-based Practice Infection Prevention.
  3. Acts as the Infection Control Officer and assures program components meet all regulatory guidelines and rules.
  4. Plans, develops, facilitates, coordinates and provides oversight for all aspects of the Infection Control and Prevention Program system-wide for Barton Health (includes SNF and all off-site systems).
  5. Ensures compliance with the requirements of CMS, Joint Commission, Public Health, and other applicable regulatory and/or accrediting agencies.
  6. Responsible for development and oversight of Infection Control budget.
  7. Participates as appropriate in selection of new products, supplies and equipment.
  8. Serves as co-chair of the Infection Control & Prevention Committee, a system-wide committee.
  9. Collects statistics, prepares and presents reports to Infection Prevention and Control Committee and all others as appropriate. Includes data to drive recommendations for infection control practice.
  10. Reviews and revises system-wide, as well as unit-specific infection control policies to maintain standard and practice compliance. Reviews and contributes to other department policies as requested such as EVS, Reprocessing, SNF, Emergency Preparedness, Engineering and Occupational Health.
  11. Ensures 24 hour coverage to respond to Infection Control concerns.
  12. Takes steps to prevent or control the acquisition and transmission of identified infectious agents.
  13. Completes epidemiological investigations of significant clusters of infections above the expected level and participates in developing corrective action plans.
  14. Performs inspection rounds in all areas of Barton Health system to monitor compliance.
  15. Chairs and facilitates the Diabetes Workgroup, with the focus on policy change, order set review/update and standardization of diabetes patient education.
  16. Responds to the needs of the department by performing other duties, as necessary.
