The Vannie E. Cook Jr. Children's Cancer and Hematology Clinic in McAllen, TX is seeking a full-time Research Nurse II.  Nurse will function as the Long Term Survivor Navigator and will be responsible for patient care and research related activities.  Duties will include screening, enrollment, data collection and monitoring of research participants.   Candidate will be interacting with Rio Grande Valley pediatric cancer patients and their families.

Job Duties
  • Performs responsibilities in a manner that promotes quality and safe patient care and customer service.
  • Adheres to the scope of practices as defined by the Texas Nurse Practice Act.
  • Recruits, screens, enrolls and evaluates patients that participate in a research study.
  • Schedules study visits and meetings related to studies.
  • Collects study specimens, administers medications, and follows patients progress through care.
  • Maintains patient charts and medical records.
  • Ensures the clinical studies are conducted in accordance with guidelines of the FDA and other regulatory agencies.
  • Educates patients in significant aspects of study.
  • Serves as a liaison and distributes research information to faculty, research staff, principle investigator, and others as required.
  • May assist in developing the clinical trial agreement.


Role will function as Survivorship Navigator for the Vannie Cook Children's Cancer and Hematology Clinic.  Navigator will work with Pediatric Cancer Survivors to:

  • Educates patients that complete cancer treatment on the importance of long-term survivor follow-up.
  • Outreach lost to follow-up survivors to re-engage them in long-term follow-up. 
  • Enrolls and consents interested participants in Long Term Survivor research projects.
  • Collects data on Long Term Survivors including information on barriers to seeking aftercare.
  • Identifies and provides grant-supported resources to overcome barriers to care.
  • Diagnosis/treatment data abstraction and entry to Passport for Care. 
  • Provides PFC mobile health app access to survivors at the first LTS visit.
  • Serves as point of contact/resource for survivors via the PFC messaging app.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
  • Two years of relevant experience as a licensed Registered Nurse (RN). 
  • Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the State of Texas Board of Nursing.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
