POSITION SUMMARY
Responsible for the general well being of the patient during the peri-operative period, acts as the patient's advocate and works as a member of the surgical team, is knowledgeable in the areas of aseptic technique, infection control, emergency procedures, and general operating room procedures. Works with highly technical, ever-changing equipment.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education or Formal Training

Special Qualifications (Licensure, Registration, etc.)
1. Colorado RN license in good standing
2. BLS certification required within conditional period.
3. Member of professional organization and CNOR preferred

Knowledge, Skill and Ability
1. Clinical competency with routine surgical skills in circulating with scrubbing preferred
2. Demonstrates assessment and response to changes in the patient's condition (basic understanding and integration of patient care and practice)
3. Communicates clearly on all aspects of documentation
4. Must be flexible to rotate shifts and adjust hours as needed
5. Able to assess, treat and/or care for patients of all ages
6. Demonstrates knowledge of preparation, maintenance, cleaning and usage of equipment
7. Prepares specimens and lab forms for laboratory analysis

Experience
Minimum of one year OR circulating experience and scrub experience preferred

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED
1. Standard medical/hospital equipment including:
a. Cardiac monitoring
b. Airway equipment
c. Non-Invasive and invasive monitoring devices
d. CPM machine
e. Arthrombic pumps
f. IV pumps
g. Hospital beds
h. Wheelchairs and carts
i. Positioning aids
j. Telephone
k. Intercom systems
l. Computers, etc.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES
1. The employee must be able to consistently support, push, pull and/or lift up to 10 pounds, frequently support, push, pull and/or lift up to 30 pounds and occasionally support, push, pull and/or transfer up to 50 pounds (for example, moving a patient from a wheelchair to a bed).
2. Physical working environment may include, but not be limited to, any of the following hazards: chemical, electrical, mechanical, biowaste, explosive, radiation, paraceytic acid, laser and plumes (laser and cautery).
3. Environmental conditions may include, but not be limited to, variations in temperature, noise, odors, etc.
4. While performing duties of this job, the employee is required to constantly stand and walk. The employee frequently is required to stoop, crouch and twist. The employee is occasionally required to kneel, squat and sit.
5. Functional physical demands include manual dexterity and reaching.
6. The following senses will be needed for essential duties of the job: speech, vision, hearing, smell and touch.
7. May have to work for more hours than scheduled on a day of call duty.

SUPERVISORY DUTIES
Directs activities of volunteers, OR assistants, secretaries, surgical technologists, students and in assigned OR suite

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Develops and implements a teaching plan based on identified patient and family needs.
2. Continues to expand knowledge base through clinical practice and self-directed learning, identifying own strengths and weaknesses.
3. Sets priorities utilizing effective time management when delivering patient care with completion of responsibility.
4. May be required to perform point of care testing. May be a point of care trainer.
5. Provides constructive input to problem solving in both patient and unit situations.
6. Consults with and/or advises appropriate personnel of situations requiring follow-up or attention.
7. Provides cost effective quality care.
8. Responsible for monitoring specific supplies and equipment in service.
9. Function as preceptor for students and/or orients with direction.
10. Assists with data collection for QA/research activities.
11. Flexibility to rotate shifts and adjust hours as needed. Is scheduled for emergency call on nights, weekends and holidays (per diem —department specific). Mandatory overtime.
12. Demonstrates clinical competency with routing surgical skills including scrubbing and circulating.
13. Demonstrates assessment and response to changes in the patient's condition. (Basic understanding and integration of patient care and practice.) Evaluates interventions and alters patients needs.
14. Actively seeks the participation of members of the health care team, the patient, and the patient's family to assure continuity of care.
15. Communicates clearly on all aspects of documentation.
16. Able to assess, treat and/or care for patients of all ages.
17. Demonstrates knowledge of preparation, maintenance, cleaning and usage of equipment
18. Prepares specimens and lab forms for laboratory analysis.
19. Involves self with activities that improve the department or hospital.
20. Works within a budget to ensure the service or department has the equipment and products necessary to carry out its' responsibilities.
21. Arranges or provides for educational opportunities to ensure competency levels of the employees under their management.
22. Works with involved or impacted departments when planning, initiating or evaluating products/systems that affect other areas.
23. It is the expectation that all care providers document accurately and in real time, utilizing the electronic medical record within their department.
