Security Officer - PRN

Position Summary:

Provides the highest level of safety and security by patrolling assigned areas to deter, detect and investigate crime and/or any suspicious activity which could cause harm to individuals or property; effective monitoring of electronic surveillance equipment; effective monitoring of hospital emergency systems and ability to dispatch appropriate personnel via radio. Responsible for organizing work load as assigned. Displays professional, safe conduct in all interactions. Maintains positive working relationships with staff, other departments, physicians and peers. Displays conduct in support of CHI St. Luke's Health Memorial Mission & Vision.

  12. Responsible for patrolling assigned areas, on foot or by vehicle, Provides service and protection.

  13. Investigates suspicious person(s) or activity, responds to crimes in progress, crimes that have occurred, disturbances, accidents, various public service calls, and other miscellaneous incidents.

  14. Investigates complaints, criminal incidents, suspicious activity and accidents. Prepares detailed written incident reports.

  15. When assigned to dispatch, effectively monitors electronic surveillance equipment to identify any suspicious person(s) or activity and dispatches appropriate personnel to investigate; Operates base radio station by dispatching appropriate personnel to emergency situations and/or requests for assistance by monitoring all radio traffic.

  16. Responsible for answering multiple telephone lines in response to routine and emergency inquires and dispatches appropriate personnel in regards to those inquires.

  17. Maintains appropriate logs of daily radio communications received from shift personnel and requests received via telephone; tabulates data from logs to produce required activity reports.

  18. Provides general information and assistance to patients, visitors and employees, including safety related escorts as requested, to various campus locations.

  19. Collaborates with various department personnel and external agencies to gather and exchange information; promote departmental services provided to the campus.

  20. Assure proper working order of equipment; notify appropriate personnel when repairs and/or maintenance are necessary.

  21. Intervene as necessary to confront and restrain hostile and abusive persons in a manner necessary to reduce risk of personal injury to patients, visitors or employees, and to minimize the disruption of operations.

  22. Aids the Security Supervisor in reviewing security documents and related reports.

  23. Assumes shift lead role in the absence of a Security Supervisor.

  24. Establishes/maintains effective and respectful communication in all collaborative relationships.

  25. Supports department-based goals and contributes to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.

  26. Performs duties in accordance with that of hospital policies and procedures, and regulatory agency guidelines.

  27. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education Level


High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)




Valid Class “C” Texas Driver's License

Must be eligible to be insured by hospital.

*Level III Commissioned Security Officer (CSO) Registration with State of Texas (TOPS)

*To be obtained within 60 days from date of hire/transfer into position.

Ability to obtain and retain Firearm and Taser qualification.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Work requires a high standard of personal appearance and grooming which conveys a professional image.
Work requires self-initiative and motivation to enable the completion of tasks or projects with minimal supervision.
Work requires analytical ability necessary to gather and interpret basic data, prepare routine reports and maintain accurate records.

Requires contacts inside and outside at all organizational levels – requires considerable tact, discretion and persuasion skills – improper handling may affect operating results.

Must be able to understand and follow standard practice or oral or written instructions.



Must be at least 21 years of age

Must have a basic knowledge of Texas Penal Code of Criminal Procedures

One (1) to three (3) years previous law enforcement or military experience
