ROLE SUMMARY
Responsible for assisting the Operations Manager with management of all warehouse activities and supervision of all warehouse employees. The primary focus of this position will be to ensure that all warehouse activities for the Milwaukee distribution facility are completed in a cost-effective and timely manner. This includes receiving, order picking, replenishment, shipping and delivery of pet foods and accessories for General Pet Supply and Hills Pet Nutrition. This position will also assist with hiring, training, and development of warehouse personnel. This person will also provide support and backup to the Transportation Manager with all transportation activities.
MEASURES OF SUCCESS
- Assist with the development, implementation and administration of policies, procedures in areas of receiving, order selection, replenishment, shipping, physical inventory, and cycle counting.
- Provide backup for and assist the Transportation Manager with daily activities related to the delivery operation.
- Assist with hiring, training, development, evaluation, and discipline of warehouse personnel. This includes, planning, scheduling personnel and monitoring employee workload, documenting employee performance and conducting performance reviews to fit operational needs.
- Assist with management and supervision of all warehouse activities for Central General Pet and Hills Pet Nutrition, including processing orders, picking, replenishment, receiving, invoicing, loading and inventory activities.
- Ensure time sheets for hourly personnel are accurate and complete prior to payroll processing.
- Work with Warehouse Supervisors and other Department Managers to meet Company objectives.
- Work with outside vendors on maintenance and other purchases to minimize operating cost.
- Work with brokers and carriers to negotiate the lowest possible shipping cost for outbound and inbound shipments.
- Ensure operations follow federal, state and local laws and regulations, including the Department of Transportation.
- Promote a safe and efficient work environment for all employees.
- Active member of the Safety Committee, which includes scheduling monthly meetings, quarterly walk-through inspections of the facility, following up on any safety concerns, electing safety committee members on an annual basis and ensuring the safety of all employees, guests, vendors, etc.
- Regular attendance and onsite presence
- Responsible for daily management/supervision of quality systems and ensuring employees are following AIB and GDP requirements.
- Performs system transactions in E21 and SAP in support of the daily operation.
- Perform the duties of warehouse and supervisory personnel, including receiving, order selecting, replenishment and loading trucks as needed.
- Work hands on with employees during the orientation and training period by inspecting orders on the warehouse floor.
- Assist with maintenance of the facility, material handling equipment and vehicle fleet. Communicate any issues with the Operations or Transportation Manager.
- Work with employees and customers to solve problems in a professional manner.
IDEAL CANDIDATE ATTRIBUTES
- Bachelor's Degree in Operations Management or Logistics preferred, and 3 - 5 years of previous management experience in a fast-paced, high volume distribution environment.
- Understanding of DOT guidelines and experience working with leased or owned vehicles is a plus. Extensive experience working with Common Carriers and UPS is a must.
- Must have excellent computer skills, including previous experience working with Warehouse and Transportation Management Systems is a must.
- Must be familiar with, understand, abide by, and enforce all Company policies and procedures.
- Able to safely operate and become certified in the operation of all warehouse equipment including forklifts, pallet jacks and shrink wrap machines.
- Must possess excellent computers skills and can effectively utilize multiple ERP systems and various shipping software programs.
- Advanced level proficiency in Microsoft Office, internet, web-based and specific job-related software applications. Must have the ability to create charts and spreadsheets that will help track employee and operational performance and manage KPI's.
- Possess excellent interpersonal and management skills to aid in the development, direction, delegation and discipline of staff. Must be understanding of people and their problems, diplomatic and have a sense of fairness and consistency.
- Able to communicate effectively in both oral and written format. Must be able to read, write and speak English.
- Must be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
- Able to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
- Must be flexible to changing customer or operational demands and able to work overtime on short notice. Position requires working until the job is complete.
- Must possess exceptional problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate problems, identify the root cause, and develop solutions to eliminate the problem from occurring again.
- Must be able to manage multiple projects/tasks at the same time, be well organized and have a strong attention to detail.
- Able to perform the physical requirements of the Warehouse Associates.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment to achieve results or work independently with little or no supervision.
- Ability to develop and document processes and procedures.
- Excellent planning, time management, collaboration, decision making, organization, and presentation skills.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
ADDITIONAL CANDIDATE ATTRIBUTES PREFERRED
- Previous forklift certification.
- Previous delivery experience and strong knowledge of DOT regulations and routing
- Previous experience with driver logbooks
- Previous experience with sanitation programs for warehouses.
- Understanding of ISO requirements
- Previous experience in a continuous improvement environment. Lean or six Sigma
