The Painter ensures operational excellence throughout the Scheduled Maintenance section of the Houston Airport System by providing a variety of commercial interior & exterior painting equipment and hand and power tools, such as airless paint machines, rollers and paint brushes, line lasers, spray equipment, and other related materials used in painting. The purpose of the Painter position is to perform general painting, restoration and refinishing techniques to reduce replacement costs and enhance the life of airfield markings, equipment, and facilities throughout Bush Intercontinental Airport and William P. Hobby Airport of the Houston Airport System. The Schedule Maintenance team serves a wide scope of internal and external customers including, but not limited to being responsible for identifying, preparing and obtaining all required materials, supplies and equipment to complete all provided assignments. Uses a variety of commercial painting equipment and hand and power tools, such as airless paint machines, rollers and paint brushes, line lasers, scarifier (abrasion) machines, spray equipment, stencils and other related materials used in painting. Duties include but are not limited to spray and brush painting, varnishing, priming, scraping, floating and taping, and sanding. Responsible for maintaining spraying and painting equipment use to enhance the appearance of various structures such as interior/exterior of buildings, parking lots, runways and taxiways, trailers, and industrial surface equipment. Oversees the daily functions to ensure a high level of quality and service. Reviews and implements work orders and assignments in accordance to federal and local rules and regulations that meet airport standards per Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR) Part 139 and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) currently Advisory Circular (AC) pertain to airport markings. The success of this role is highly dependent on the ability to calculates the amount required of material needed to estimate the cost of each project based on surface measurements and/or work orders. Responsible for executing work in a highly efficient manner with zero to little re-work and maintaining a safe and clean work area & any other duties as assigned. "Must be able to pass a criminal background check, obtain and maintain federally mandated security clearances where required."

The Painter will include but is not limited to:

  • Reviews and implements work orders and assignments.
  • Identifies, prepares and obtains required materials, supplies and equipment to complete assignments.
  • Performs general painting, restoration and refinishing techniques, e.g., spray and brush painting, varnishing, priming, scraping, floating and taping.
  • Identifies, prepares and obtains required materials, supplies and equipment to complete assignments.
  • Repairs damaged surfaces.
  • Mixes and blends paint to match colors.
  • Uses a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Maintains a safe and clean work area

Performing these duties will involve lifting, pulling, or pushing physical objects; seeing details and color of objects; observing and differentiating details; adjusting to repetitive activities; climbing and working from ladders and scaffolds; operating power tools; driving city vehicles; working in hot, cold, noisy work areas and being exposed to odors, fumes, dust and mists, understanding spoken and written communications; lifting up to eighty (80) pounds and using protective glasses; shields and respirators, and working as a member of the team. Must be willing and available to work all shifts including rotation, holidays and weekends. Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearances.


Ability to read, write, add, subtract and follow oral and/or basic written instructions as might normally be acquired through nine to eleven years of formal schooling. No special knowledge of any subject area or technical field is required. Requires a valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving.

Two years of experience as a painter are required.

Valid Class C Texas driver's license and compliance with city's policy on driving (AP 2-2). May require a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with an "H" endorsement for transporting hazardous material.


Preference will be given to applicants with experience in wood finishing, industrial painting and drywall experience. Some knowledge of associated building trades such as sheet rock and glazing is a plus. Knowledge of proper mixing and matching of paints and finishes; proper cleaning of supplies (brushes and equipment); paints, varnishes, stains, enamels, lacquers and redecorates walls, floors, woodwork and fixtures of buildings using appropriate tools and techniques. Experience with Airport Markings or an EPA certification is preferred.
