DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Painter ensures operational excellence throughout the Corrective Maintenance section of the Houston Airport System by utilizing a variety of commercial interior and hand and power tools, such as airless paint machines, rollers and paint brushes, spray equipment, and other related materials used in painting. The purpose of the Painter position is to perform general painting, restoration and refinishing techniques to reduce replacement costs and enhance the life of equipment, and facilities throughout Bush Intercontinental Airport and William P. Hobby Airport of the Houston Airport System. The Corrective Maintenance team serves a wide scope of internal and external customers including, but not limited to being responsible for identifying, preparing and obtaining all required materials, supplies and equipment to complete all provided assignments. Duties include but are not limited to spray and brush painting, varnishing, priming, scraping, floating and taping, and sanding. Responsible for maintaining spraying and painting equipment used to enhance the appearance of various structures such as interior/exterior of buildings, trailers, and industrial surface equipment. Oversees the daily functions to ensure a high level of quality and service. Reviews and implements work orders and assignments in accordance to federal and local rules. The success of this role is highly dependent on the ability to calculates the amount of material needed to estimate the cost of each project based on surface measurements and/or work orders. Responsible for executing work in a highly efficient manner with zero to little re-work and maintaining a safe and clean work area & any other duties as assigned. "Must be able to pass a criminal background check, obtain and maintain federally mandated security clearances where required."

The Painter will include but is not limited to:

  • Reviews and implements work orders and assignments.
  • Identifies, prepares and obtains required materials, supplies and equipment to complete assignments.
  • Performs general painting, restoration and refinishing techniques, e.g., spray and brush painting, varnishing, priming, scraping, floating and taping.
  • Identifies, prepares and obtains required materials, supplies and equipment to complete assignments.
  • Repairs damaged surfaces.
  • Mixes and blends paint to match colors.
  • Uses a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Maintains a safe and clean work area

WORKING CONDITIONS
The position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time. There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises and minor burns.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to read, write, add, subtract and follow oral and/or basic written instructions as might normally be acquired through nine to eleven years of formal schooling. No special knowledge of any subject area or technical field is required. Requires a valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Two years of experience as a painter are required.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
Requires a valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving.
May require a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with an "H" endorsement for transporting hazardous material.

PREFERENCES

Preference will be given to applicants with experience in wood finishing, industrial painting and drywall experience. Some knowledge of associated building trades such as sheet rock and glazing is a plus. Knowledge of proper mixing and matching of paints and finishes; proper cleaning of supplies (brushes and equipment); paints, varnishes, stains, enamels, lacquers and redecorates walls, floors, woodwork and fixtures of buildings using appropriate tools and techniques. Experience with Airport Markings or an EPA certification is preferred.

**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6. **

Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification. The salary range is:Pay Grade 11
