General Summary

We are seeking a Systems Engineering Group Lead to supervise and lead systems engineers as they build, maintain, and troubleshoot the expanding infrastructure of NASA's Huntsville Operations Support Center (HOSC). HOSC provides engineering, operations and maintenance, system development services, and tools for the International Space Station and Space Launch System. You will be part of a talented team of engineers that demonstrate superb technical competency in the delivery of mission critical infrastructure to ensure 24x7x365 availability, while continuously improving capability, performance, and security. Systems Engineering Team responsibilities consist of design, requirement definition, deployment, and maintenance of computer ground systems and services including voice, video, storage, and telemetry subsystems.

At NASA, “systems engineering” is defined as a methodical, multi-disciplinary approach for the design, realization, technical management, operations, and retirement of a system. A “system” is the combination of elements that function together to produce the capability required to meet a need. The elements include all hardware, software, equipment, facilities, personnel, processes, and procedures needed for this purpose; that is, all things required to produce system-level results. The results include system-level qualities, properties, characteristics, functions, behavior, and performance. The value added by the system as a whole, beyond that contributed independently by the parts, is primarily created by the relationship among the parts; that is, how they are interconnected. It is a way of looking at the “big picture” when making technical decisions. It is a way of achieving stakeholder functional, physical, and operational performance requirements in the intended use environment over the planned life of the system within cost, schedule, and other constraints. It is a methodology that supports the containment of the life cycle cost of a system. In other words, systems engineering is a logical way of thinking.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Serve as Systems Engineer Group Lead by supervising and leading a group of 5-10 systems engineers within the Systems Engineering Team
    • Provide technical guidance on requirements analysis, architectural and risk considerations, design, and implementation of engineering projects
    • Provide technical guidance on obsolescence planning
    • Provide technical guidance on scheduling and planning
    • Serve as technical and programmatic advisor to the Systems Engineering Manager
    • Provide technical guidance on maintenance and enhancement of the IT hardware infrastructure
    • Provide guidance on effective management of the Integrated Project Team
    • Manage and monitor installed systems and infrastructure and identify improvements through data analysis
  • Serve as Systems Engineer on your own projects
    • Lead the development of the concept of operations and resulting system architecture, defining boundaries, identifying use cases, defining, allocating, and tracing requirements, evaluating design tradeoffs, balancing technical risk between systems, defining and assessing interfaces, and providing insight to verification and validation activities
    • Lead the technical planning effort with primary responsibility for documenting technical plans, requirements, and specification documentation, design documentation, and certification packages
    • Provide professional oral and written project plans and status to NASA customers and HOSC management
    • Provide accurate and timely cost and schedule information for technical activities
    • Examine on a continual basis the risks of technical deviations from the plans and identify potential technical problems before they occur. Plan, invoke, and perform risk-handling activities as needed across the life of the product or project to mitigate impacts on meeting cost, schedule and performance objectives
    • Evaluate technical issues, identify decision criteria, identify alternatives, analyze alternatives, select alternatives, and make recommendations to management
    • Monitor progress of the technical effort and provide status information for support of the system design, product realization, and technical management efforts
    • Collaborate with and coordinate efforts of an integrated product team in the performance of assigned projects
    • Monitor and test for potential performance bottlenecks and other issues, identify potential solutions, and work with the technical staff and vendors to implement those solutions
    • Evaluate vendor capabilities to provide required products or services
    • Serve as technical consultant to other departments and to management
    • Support Operations and Maintenance by determining configuration changes based on new mission objectives and resolving anomalies in infrastructure behavior
