We have a unique opportunity for an experienced electrical engineer/programmer/controls engineer/technical, multitalented person (we know this is a tall order, and we're looking for someone special) to join our small elite team of creative thinkers, problem solvers, and tinkerers, bringing cutting edge ideas to life. Oh, and it just so happens you'll be working at one of the coolest labs ever – no really – we have an actual supermarket, a commercial kitchen, a commercial building, and best of all, the world's only 2-story house inside of an environmental chamber…we can take it all the way down to -20°F!
As an Innovation Engineer you are directly responsible for designing, building, commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, and repairing both the hardware and software elements of solutions using whatever technologies best suit the given task. You are comfortable wearing many hats over the course of a project and regularly engaging with customers, in uncovering and defining new opportunities.
While this job has no specific technology/language requirements, you are in charge of maintaining existing projects primarily built using Dockerized Python applications and Node-Red running on Raspberry PIs and Linux VMs, as well as Emerson iPro PLCs programmed using IsAGRAF. You don't need to be an expert in these languages today, but you will need a strong grasp of object-oriented programming and must be willing to learn quickly – you'll have our full support along the way.

AS AN INNOVATION ENGINEER, YOU WILL:
- Translate and document customer learning into viable solutions
- Design, build, and test prototype controls for various innovation projects
- Design, fabricate, and test simple circuits and PCBs
- Work in a collaborative environment keeping an open mind with a “can do” or “I'll figure it out” attitude
- Keep current on controls & IoT technology
- Strengthen and build up software & controls capabilities of the Helix
- Work as a team member to facilitate or participate in projects
- Present and communicate in an exceptional and clear manner
- Be strong support for the Helix with controls and data access

FLEXIBLE WORK SCHEDULE - REMOTE WORK OPTION AND CORE HOURS:
This role has the flexibility of a remote work option up to three days a week and a core hour schedule. You can choose to flex your start and stop times given you are working during the core hours of 9:00am - 3:00pm. Our teams work together to ensure our chosen work schedules enable our creativity and productivity as we serve the needs of our customers!
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Engineering Technology
- Two (2) years of engineering experience, relevant co-op or internship experience will be considered
- Demonstrated capabilities or familiarity with using the following:
- Programming languages such as Python, C++, Java, Labview, etc.
- Databases such as SQL, BLOB storage, etc.
- IoT communication protocols (MQTT, REST, SOAP, etc.) via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Cellular, etc.
- Developing hardware prototypes using Raspberry Pi, Arduino, ESP32, etc.
- Legal authorization to work in the United States - Sponsorship will not be provided for this role.
PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering
- MS in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science
- Seven years (7) engineering experience
- Demonstrated capabilities or familiarity with using the following:
- Web frontend and backend development experience
- Developing App's in Node-Red
- Accessing data using a wide range of APIs
- Strong Linux familiarity and experience developing Docker containers
- Engineering experience with the following preferred:
- HVAC and Refrigeration
- IsAGRAF to program Emerson iPros
- Previous experience working in a start-up or early-stage innovation projects
