Description

Background

Telecom and datacom backbone networks are built using optical fiber as it exhibits the lowest transmission loss of all the possible physical media. This same fiber is now being tested for feasibility of carrying quantum bits of information. In a recent article by Takemoto et al. the authors demonstrate secure quantum key distribution over 100 km by using single photon sources. They anticipate feasibility up to 120 km and secure key rates of 0.307 bps. In another study Xiang et al demonstrate O-band quantum dot generated entangled photon transmission over deployed fiber. These results demonstrate that single photon sources can be used in future telecom quantum key distribution (QKD) networks.

Thesis description

We offer a master thesis project on the implementation and realization of a quantum communication network. The network is based on deployed optical fibers linking the KTH campus with Ericsson research lab in Kista and will be operated with single and entangled photon sources based on quantum dots.

The work is to be carried out between the Quantum Nano Photonics group at KTH and Ericsson.

Project goals

Your task will be to design and realize a device to control and correct single photon polarization and to implement various quantum key distribution schemes. In addition, we also aim at studying and establishing quantum communication protocols.

Qualifications

  • Last year of master's degree studies in the area of mathematics, physics or related fields.
  • Be proficient in fiber optics, basic quantum optics and quantum key distribution.
  • Proficient in the use of spoken and written English.
