Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:
The mission of the Charles Waddell Chesnutt Library is to support the University in its educational, research and cultural endeavors through careful selection, acquisition, organization, and interpretation of information resources. In addition, the Chesnutt Library assumes its special role as a major cultural resource for the community and the region at large. The primary purpose of the Cataloging Department provides effective, accurate tools that assist our users in locating information resources, either locally or remotely through the Internet. The cataloging department, organizes, classifies and maintains information resources in all formats and processes them in a timely manner.Description of Work Continued:
Primary Purpose of the Position:
The primary purpose of this position is to oversee the cataloging department. Primary responsibilities include: coordinating, planning, managing, and supervising departmental staff and daily operations, performing original and complex copy cataloging of monographic and serials materials in all formats, (media, electronic, digital, manuscripts, archives, etc.) and standards using the MARC format, LC subject heading and the OCLC cataloging system. This position will also participate in library instruction activities, which entails some teaching, outreach and engagement activities to connect with the university community.Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
MLS degree from an ALA-accredited library and information science program; knowledge on integrated library system functionality pertaining to cataloging;
Previous experience with academic library cataloging and metadata creation of material in all formats, including electronic/digital resources.
Previous experience in creating and editing non-MARC metadata using standards and schema such as Dublin Core, EAD, etc.
Previous experience using cataloging standards and tools such as AACR2/RDA, MARC, LCC, LCSH, MARC21 and OCLC Connexion.
Previous experience with integrated library systems.Knowledge skills and abilities:
Knowledge of current cataloging practices, including metadata; a working knowledge of integrated library system functionality pertaining to cataloging; excellent analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills as well as initiative.
Demonstrated knowledge of cataloging standards and tools including AACR2/RDA, LCC, LCSH, MARC21, OCLC WorldCat, and OCLC Connexion.
Demonstrated knowledge of one or more non-MARC metadata schemes such as Dublin Core, EAD, METS, MODS, etc.
Demonstrated and effective problem-solving skills.
Proven capability for managing a variety of tasks and multiple priorities.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and independently in a team environment.
Demonstrated initiative and proven ability to learn new technologies and adapt to changes in the profession.Preferred Qualifications:
