Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:

The mission of the Charles Waddell Chesnutt Library is to support the University in its educational, research and cultural endeavors through careful selection, acquisition, organization, and interpretation of information resources. In addition, the Chesnutt Library assumes its special role as a major cultural resource for the community and the region at large.

Primary Purpose of the Position:

Provide vision and strategic direction to all public services departments to strengthen the liberal education process. This position will be assigned a lead role in implementing new initiatives for the library, as well as the evaluation, improvement of existing systems, processes and procedures, especially related to public services.

Description of Work Continued:

Responsibilities include the following:

Oversee all public services areas (access
services/circulation, media lab, reference,archives)
Participates in the planning, development, and implementation of the Library’s Assessment Initiatives
Participates as a member of the leadership team
A leader in library outreach & programming
efforts via library instruction, student
engagement and research initiatives

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

MLS degree from an ALA-accredited library and information science program. Demonstrated experience in public services. Three years or more of supervisory experience in library services.

Knowledge skills and abilities:

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and constructively with others

Commitment in providing exceptional public service

Demonstrated knowledge of emerging trends and issues in higher education and the opportunities for and impact on library services

Knowledge of emerging trends and issues in information and media literacies, liaison services, and research services

Excellent organizational, interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills

Skills in the development, implementation, and management of assessment, program, and policy initiatives

Demonstrated ability to multi-task and prioritize activities and responsibilities

Ability to anticipate, adapt, and respond to changing needs

Preferred Qualifications:

Academic librarian experience; direct
supervisory experience in areas (access
services/circulation, media lab, reference,

Experience managing functions in WMS integrated library system

Strong user centered public service philosophy

Displays strong leadership and managerial skills

Demonstrated ability to work successfully in
a collaborative, team-oriented environment.

Demonstrated knowledge of current issues
and opportunities in public, media and digital services sector

Familiarity with information and digital
literacy concepts, trends, pedagogies and
