The Director, Surveillance Services is responsible for implementing systems and services that provide critical surveillance data used to separate air traffic and provide situational awareness for airspace users. In the execution of the duties of the office, the Director administers an annual appropriations of approximately $313M as well as $35M no-year funding in support of the Spectrum Efficient National Surveillance Radar Program (SENSR) and leads a team of approximately 360 employees in a variety of professional and technical disciplines.
Specific responsibilities include:
Provides authoritative guidance on matters concerning National Airspace System surveillance systems.
Develops national policies to incorporate greater efficiency in spectrum use and new surveillance technologies with existing surveillance capabilities and for the sustainment and maintenance of FAA legacy surveillance and broadcast assets.
Directs the establishment of a national surveillance services portfolio approach; completes major acquisition milestones and deliverables such as Investment Analysis Readiness Decision Life Cycle Cost Estimates.
Sustains systems that support current, tactical air traffic operations and for executing new NextGen foundational surveillance technologies and leads efforts to keep critical sustainment programs on track, develop and deploy surveillance and broadcast services, and implement an innovative spectrum acquisition strategy for the SENSR.
Leads the SENSR Joint Program Office comprised of representatives from the Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric to utilize spectrum auction proceeds to implement a cross-agency spectrally efficient surveillance capability; directs the acquisition strategy, assessments and recommends the path forward to an alternative radar technology capability.
