Essential Job Functions  (8 - 10 key responsibilities of the job)

  • Provide appropriate skill level to perform interventions/procedures as directed.  See unit-specific skill lists.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and performance of clinical competency which may include: vital signs, basic respiratory care such as incentive spirometry and oxygen setup, pulse oximetry and patient transportation.
  • Establish and maintain open and positive communications in all aspects of job performance.
  • Assist with the admission and discharge process by collecting selected data and specimens, applying necessary equipment, labeling patient clothes and belongings, informing patient/family of unit routines and transports patient as necessary.
  • Assist care team in initiating and maintaining patient care records.
  • Answer patient call lights and responds to patient request/need in a timely manner. 
  • Communicate clinical needs to the appropriate clinical staff.
  • Maintain a commitment to career growth and development by participation in mandatory annual in-services, certification, Lakeland Regional Health System committees, and educational programs for improvement of self to maintain competency.
  • Participate in economical utilization of supplies, utilities and equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and needed.  These duties may vary depending upon the unit, patient type and need, number and complexity of treatments provided, prior training and experience.
  • Additional duties may also include non-clinical duties consistent with meeting the needs of the patient and care team, such as ADT function in EPIC, greeting visitors, answering phones and making calls.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

License/Registration/Certification Required:  BCLS

License/Registration/Certification Preferred:

Minimum Education Required:  High School Diploma or equivalent

Advanced Education Required:  (Associate/Bachelor/Master/PhD level and applicable field of study or related field) or equivalent combination of training and/or experience: 

Advanced Education Preferred:  (Associate/Bachelor/Master/PhD)

Minimum Experience Required:  

Additional Experience Preferred:  Previous experience in a hospital or patient care setting, successful completion of a nurse assistant training course or completion of the first semester of a clinical rotation in nursing is preferred.   A minimum of three months prior nurse assistant or certified nurse assistant experience preferred. 

Skills (Interpersonal and job complexity):  Must be able to demonstrate customer focused interpersonal skills in order to interact in an effective manner with patients and families.  Must be able to collaborate with unit teams and various levels of hospital personnel as part of a team.

Basic computer, data entry, typing, filing and organization skills required.

Abilities:  Must be able to perform a variety of basic skills according to patient care needs and apply skills for the care role with successful completion of unit specific training.  Must demonstrate ability to organize, prioritize and manage time.  Reading, writing, grammar and mathematical skills and the ability to speak and understand the English language.

Ability to work extended hours beyond normal work schedule to include, but not limited to, evenings, weekends, extended shifts and/or extra shifts, various locations, sometimes on short notice.

Environmental Conditions:  Potential exposure to fumes, dust, gases, and odors.   Frequent changes in temperature may occur.  Possibility of exposure to communicable diseases.  May require access to locked Med Rooms based on assigned duties/unit.
