Eligible for up to $1250 signing bonus! This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by serving fresh, flavorful, nutritious food in a caring manner to patients, families, and staff. The Patient Nutrition Assistant is responsible for patient menu processes – which includes delivering meals and collecting trays, assisting patients with menu selections and correcting menus per diet ordered by physician and food preferences. Demonstrates excellent customer service relationships with external and internal customers. Job Duties
- Demonstrates ability to use POS Micros Menu for guest menu selections. (N/A)
- Demonstrates ability to complete forms in a timely manner (two week numbers, tracking of meals, defect tracking, patient tray forms, and call-ins). (N/A)
- Demonstrates ability to use Nutrition Services software program to print and revise tray tickets, menus, and tallies for room service. (N/A)
- Demonstrates ability to input patient specific notes, print menus, deliver menus, and input menus for specific nursing units. (N/A)
- Demonstrates ability to input diet orders (calorie counts), protocols (diabetic, dietitian consults), dietary messages, tube feeding, and allergies into Nutrition Services Software program. (N/A)
- Communicates effectively with all Food & Nutrition Services staff to resolve service issues.
- Demonstrates understanding and use of appropriate abbreviations
- Completes data entry into Electronic Medical Record and Nutrition Services software system. Demonstrates ability to accurately calculate and document percentage of meal consumed, fluid intake, grams of carbohydrates consumed, and calorie counts.
- Maintains a clean and orderly work area throughout shift. Completes daily, weekly and monthly cleaning as required. Practices effective sanitation and infection control procedures according to the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals (IDIA) standards and regulations. Ensures all products meet standards prior to service
- Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment while maintaining confidentiality
- Manages customer complaints in a timely and caring manner. Intervenes and provides timely and effective service recovery that demonstrates Mercy Medical Center's commitment to Service Excellence.
- Demonstrates knowledge and support of the patient and customer satisfaction improvement process. Can articulate the Press Ganey and/or customer satisfaction process.
- Correctly acquires admission, discharge, transfer and diet order changes using Electronic Medical Record and Nutrition Services software.
- Correctly uses proper communication devices with Nursing and Food & Nutrition Service staff.
- Communicates/visits all ages of patients daily in assigned area for menu selection, to obtain diet histories (diet preferences/dislikes).
- Must have knowledge of nutrition and special diets.
- Must be able to make appropriate decisions utilizing dietary guidelines for Patient's diet orders.
- Basic proficiency in operation of computer, calculator, fax machine, filing systems, telephone systems and medical terminology.

- One or more years of health care experience preferred
- High school diploma or equivalent required. As of 10/1/12, existing employees were grandfathered.
