  • Job Summary
    • Serves as a resource for the department of Biomedical Engineering. Provides primary technical support of the Biomedical Engineering Equipment Specialists and performs assigned maintenance responsibilities for certain high technology areas. Assists the Director of the department in managing the day-to-day operations of the department from a technical and managerial perspective. Supports and advances patient care by applying engineering and managerial skills to healthcare technology. Participates in the acquisition and management of our medical device inventory, ensuring that safety and regulatory issues are taken into consideration and serving as a technological consultant for any issues in the hospital where medical devices are concerned. Support the medical device database and provide accurate reporting of trends. Participates in technology assessments and develops strategic technology replacement plans. Responsible for the correct installation, use, and maintenance of all medical instrumentation in the hospital and often involves providing training for physicians, nurses, and other hospital personnel who operate the equipment. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures and standards
  • Minimum Qualifications
    • CONSIDERATION WILL BE GIVEN TO AN APPROPRIATE COMBINATION OF EDUCATION/TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE.
    • Education/Training
      • A Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering is required with specialization in medical engineering given preference. An Associate's degree level candidate with extensive technical experience and management experience will be give consideration.
    • Experience
      • A minimum of five to seven years of experience in the biomedical engineering field, with management experience for at least two years.
    • License/Certification/Registration
      • AAMICBET or CCE certification is highly desirable.
    • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
      • Demonstrated ability to supervise personnel and manage their activities. Experience in the evaluation, design, construction and implementation of complex electronic and electromechanical equipment. Excellent/in depth knowledge of applicable NFPA codes and standards, JCAHO and local regulatory requirements and industry best practices. KNOWLEDGE OF STATE OF THE ART ANALOG AND DIGITAL ELECTRONICS, MICROPROCESSOR THEORY AND OPERATION. KNOWLEDGEABLE IN THE USE OF EQUIPMENT DESCRIBED ABOVE. KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE WITH MECHANICAL AND ELECTROMECHANICAL ASSEMBLIES, GEARS, MOTORS, PISTONS, SOLENOIDS, VALVES FITTINGS, ETC IS HIGHLY DESIREABLE. KNOWLEDGE OF HUMAN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY, MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY, CLINICAL PRACTICE. KNOWLEDGE OF BIOMEDICAL INSTRUMENTATION, DEVICES AND TECHNIQUES OF MEASUREMENT. ABILITY TO TROUBLESHOOT AND REPAIR COMPLEX ANALOG AND DIGITAL CIRCUITRY TO THE COMPONENT LEVEL WITH A MINIMUM OF SUPERVISORY ASSISTANCE. ABLE TO RELATE WELL AND DEAL WITH THE NEEDS OF CLINICAL USERS, INCLUDING WORKING UNDER THE PRESSURE OF TIME CONSTRAINTS, URGENT NEED FOR THE EQUIPMENT, AND THE RISKS INVOLVED WITH IMPROPER OPERATION OF CLINICAL EQUIPMENT. ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE WELL WITH OTHERS IN DISCUSSING EQUIPMENT ISSUES WITH STAFF AND PROVIDING TRAINING TO STAFF. ABILITY TO OPERATE IN A POSITIVE CUSTOMER SERVICE ENVIRONMENT. PERFORM DOCUMENTATION IN A DETAILED, NEAT AND ORGANIZED MANNER. COMPUTER LITERACY, BOTH HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE ARE REQUIRED.
  • Primary Duties and Responsibilities
    • Serves as manager resource for the Biomedical Engineering department. Assists and supervises BMES I, BMES II and BME III staff and Imaging Specialist in the completion of repairs of clinical instrumentation, acts as primary technical support resource for technicians with difficult repair scenarios.
    • Manages projects and programs as assigned by the Director. Examples include new technology evaluation projects, installations, incident investigation and follow up, special training programs for department staff or clinical staff, etc.
    • Oversees the development and management of the Biomedical Engineering Equipment Maintenance Management Database System. Maintains database including access methods, organization, security, documentation and statistical methods. Monitors standards and procedures, and integrates systems through database design. Customizes data collection on an on-going basis and produces reports as required. Coordinates database development, department processes, and staff orientation.
    • Functions as Software Administrator for the Computerized Maintenance Management Software (CMMS): direct; maintain; and manage for successful and comprehensive tracking of clinical patient care equipment with standardization of data field use, models and vendor nomenclature.
    • Writes and provides custom queries and/or reports at needed by site directors and accommodate requests by the System. Provides information such as but not limited to, Inventory, Asset value, Purchase Information, Action O/I work order data, Service expenses, and Annual reports for Finance detailing cost by asset by department.
    • Works to integrate all ambulatory devices into the tracking and management at the system-wide level including service history.
    • Works with IT Security to maintain required data as it pertains to Medical Device Cyber Security for networked devices.
    • Assists the Director, Biomedical Engineering in personnel matters including staffing needs, selection of personnel, evaluation, disciplinary actions and supervision.
    • In the absence of the Director handles day-to-day management decisions in the department, attend meetings as required.
    • Creates reports to provide accurate information to all levels of the organization and external regulatory agencies such as the JC, DCRA, DC Dept of Health and the Environment of Care Committee.
    • Performs detailed technology assessments to support the capital acquisition process, paying attention to multiple vendor offerings and corporate procurement initiatives. Plans for support of new technology and accounts. Works with the department manager in reviewing the requirements of the specific technology to be implemented including impact studies on other equipment and maintenance requirements. Makes recommendations to evaluate current or utilize new technology.
    • Manages projects as assigned including evaluation and review of project request, coordination, and implementation of activities related to the project.
    • Analyzes and provides consultation on new medical equipment to define corrective maintenance, develop maintenance procedures.
    • Performs incident investigations and reports to the manager on the determination of cause, resolution of system malfunctions, prevention of future occurrences, and provides detailed findings to include in the Medsun report.
    • Prepares monthly department expense and work order summary reports to the various clinical areas. Maintain an expense tracking document for use in identifying and documenting examples of cost savings.
