About the Manager, Employee Communications

The manager of employee communications will support the Director, and relevant internal NS stakeholders, to engage the employee population, ensuring they feel connected to the organization, and driving reputation improvement, through effective communications activities across employee channels. Their work will be part of a larger storytelling infrastructure, under the Brand Strategy umbrella, to ensure message discipline across all channels and as such they will work collaboratively with the larger team to drive effective employee communications that can help achieve Norfolk Southern's brand objectives and improve internal engagement. This position sits within the Brand Strategy team, part of NS's larger Corporate Communications group, and is an exciting growth opportunity for someone with a passion for the power of communications to engage a workforce, connect them to a company's vision, and secure strong internal reputation for a Fortune 300 company.

Responsibilities
  • Assists Director of Brand Strategy, and takes lead where appropriate, on the execution of internal communications programs to enhance employee understanding of company's mission, vision, strategy and goals; understands and helps differentiate between various internal audiences and ensures content is relevant to each audience
  • Assists in anticipating and developing employee communication strategies to manage issues that could create reputational or business risks for the company
  • Designs and maintains section of broader editorial calendar to account for key milestone dates on company calendar and ensures content is ready for launch and is best-in-class quality; assists Director in management of key internal events
  • Will stay current on leading trends in internal communications and current events to provide insightful communications recommendations and thought leadership
  • Works cooperatively with Content Creation team to develop impactful assets consistent with branding and targeted audience
  • Work collaboratively with brand communications and measurement staff to compile analytics and metrics on employee communications to be regularly optimizing content and driving longer term strategies.
Experience
  • Undergraduate degree or higher in communications, public relations, marketing, mass communication, or related area
  • 3+ years' experience in communications, ideally in internal or employee communications, in a corporate or agency environment
  • Excellent storytelling, writing, messaging, editing abilities; has experience telling engaging stories through different types of media
  • Ability to translate and simplify complex ideas or concepts into effective messages that can excite and inspire employees
  • Strong planning, project management, and organizational skills; some experience with planning and managing events is ideal
  • Possesses a high degree of initiative and the ability to manage multiple tasks, work under pressure, and meet deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills with a proven ability to manage up
  • Motivated, curious, with a positive attitude and a desire to learn and grow
  • Exhibits a high comfort level driving action in ambiguous or evolving situations; processes new information quickly and adjusts work accordingly; displays situational adaptability
  • Possesses excellent professional maturity, sound judgment, good analytical skills
