Description

Small Equipment Operators are responsible for operating equipment including, but not limited to, paper balers, front-end loaders, bobcats, and forklifts to transport or bind paper or loose materials to facilitate handling as well as load or unload materials into trailers or/and rail cars.  Equipment Operators are exposed to unpleasant odors and sights and weather elements.  The hours and physical demand may vary by location.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Operates equipment in a safe manner in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations and company policies.
  • Performs safe driving practices while transporting, loading, and unloading loose or baled materials.
  • Safely stacks baled material in a manner which does not endanger personnel, equipment or materials.
  • Organizes and secures the stored materials in accordance with policy.
  • Conducts pre-trip/post trip inspections on equipment and complete necessary forms.
  • Performs general housekeeping in the MRF and surrounding areas to maintain a clean, safe work area in compliance with Company and OSHA standards.
  • Performs routine maintenance on equipment, (ie. lubricating, fueling and cleaning equipment).
  • Monitors recycling for signs of unacceptable material.
  • Weighs, tags, logs, and prepares baled materials for transport.
  • Professional interaction with internal and external customers.
  • Cleans waste from equipment body and wheels throughout the day.
  • Performs sorting line duties as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Ability to perform physical requirements of the job (prolonged physical exertions, including sitting, standing, reaching, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, and climbing).  Also, ability to withstand “bumpy” ride on equipment.
  • Previous experience operating equipment preferred.
  • Ability to maneuver equipment through tight areas and high equipment and pedestrian traffic.
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends and/or holidays.
  • Ability to work in plant conditions with exposure to weather elements.
  • Good verbal communication skills to be able to communicate effectively and professionally with internal and external customers.
  • Must pass a written and operational test to be licensed to operate forklift and bobcat.
  • Recycling industry experience, a plus.
  • Additional skills may be required to perform additional task(s) specific to work location, department or line of business.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Legally eligible to work in the United States.
  • Must successfully complete pre-employment testing.
  • Must be able to read and speak the English language well enough to communicate, understand, and respond to questions, directions, traffic signs, signals, and safety training.

Work Environment

  • Exposure to extreme weather conditions.
  • Exposure to dust, noise, heat, cold and fumes found in a plant environment.
  • Exposure to residential and commercial waste and recycling.
  • Exposure to high pedestrian and equipment traffic.
