The SPA Defense Strategy and Policy Team within the Strategic Systems Analysis Group (SSAG) assists senior Department of Defense customers with development and implementation of strategic concepts and initiatives, deterrence-related strategy and policy, and advanced operating concepts. The team has broad expertise working at the most senior of levels of government, and specializes in integrating complex and crosscutting issues for executive decision-makers.


The candidate is expected to perform work on various National Security topics in support of a range of US Dept. of Defense customers, with a particular focus on the Navy Nuclear Deterrent Mission. The candidate will conduct research in support of analytical projects, develop papers that analyze or recommend positions on issues, and develop and present briefing materials. The candidate may simultaneously perform on multiple projects for multiple customers, and so the ability to impose self-discipline on time management and quality assurance are highly important to the position.


· Must hold Bachelors degree or above in Political Science, International Affairs/Relations, Strategic Studies, or National Security Studies

· Must have completed coursework in deterrence theory/practice plus either arms control theory/practice, grand strategy, military strategy/history, modern military operations, strategic communications, or European or Indo-Pacific regional studies

· Must be able to quickly digest, integrate, interpret, and effectively communicate large amounts of information

· Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills as well as strong presentation skills

· Must be capable of breaking down complex issues into simplified problem statements and laying out objective approaches to identify and compare the merits of competing solutions

· Must be capable of clearly communicating complex ideas in an accessible and understandable way

· Must provide a writing sample that enables assessment of composition, analysis, and argumentation skills

· Must be proficient in using Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

· Must be comfortable working in a fast paced and ambiguous environment

· Must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. U.S. citizenship is required. Candidates will be subject to a security investigation.

Desired Qualifications:

· Masters degree or above in Political Science, International Affairs/Relations, Strategic Studies, or National Security Studies

· Active duty service as a commissioned officer in the U.S. military, with preference toward individuals possessing U.S. strategic forces experience or U.S. Navy undersea warfare experience

· Civilian experience working within or in support of the U.S. Department of Defense or an Armed Service, with preference toward individuals possessing strategic deterrence policy experience

· Experience performing or analyzing an organization's strategic communications
