Departmental Overview

This position exists to provide professional engineering development and maintenance support of the facilities, equipment, and processes of the Marvell Nanofabrication Laboratory. The laboratory is a unique 15,000 sq. ft. ultra-clean, particle-free facility that houses over 170 pieces of semiconductor process equipment which serve the research needs of more than 500 researchers.

This R & D Engineer position involves professional engineering and engineering technician support as part of academic instructional lab and/or research projects and programs. Engineering activities include the design, construction, testing of experimental systems, operation of analytical systems, establishment of performance specifications, and documentation. 


25%  Under direct supervision, participates in the development and presentation of training materials for laboratory researchers to become qualified to safely and proficiently operate laboratory equipment. Under direct supervision, develop and define a.) operator  procedures, manuals, and verification tests; b.) training and qualification procedures.

25%  Participates in the definition of test processes to monitor state of health of laboratory equipment. Collects, analyzes and presents process monitoring data to facilitate most effective use of laboratory equipment by researchers. Under direct supervision, develop and define process specifications and process monitoring schedule; process consumable inventory needs. 

20%  Under direct supervision, perform well defined maintenance tasks of specific laboratory equipment. Under direct supervision, troubleshoot nanofabrication laboratory equipment process performance. Acquire skills to independently respond to equipment problem  reports filed by lab members.   

20%  Under general supervision, participate in the oversight, restocking, distribution and waste pick up of wide range of process chemicals used by laboratory researchers. Under direct supervision, participate in the oversight, restocking, distribution of wide range of laboratory supplies. This position may be responsible for training of up to two part-time work study student  workers depending upon work load. 

10%  Understand and use the Mercury database to mark equipment status, enable tools, enter comments and problem reports and add needed support documents (e.g., detailed web-based instruction manuals, CAD drawings). Writes annual report and additional reports as needed.  Assist in the development of, and follow standard operating procedures and best known methods for safety and to prevent injuries. Practice and comply with safe working practices to assure personal safety and safety to the lab environment for colleagues and   researchers. Understand and work within guidelines to protect the environment. 

Required Qualifications

This is a one-year contract position

• Basic knowledge associated with performing entry-level professional engineering functions.
• Knowledge of the fundamental concepts of the field.
• Requires analytical skills, and must exercise strong attention to detail.
• Requires effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Analytical and judgment skills to conduct analyses and develop appropriate recommendations.
• Ability to work in a collaborative manner.
• Familiarity with broad range of micro/nanofabrication and semiconductor processing equipment.
• Hands on experience with photolithography equipment.
