UCSD Division of Biomedical Informatics:
Biomedical Informatics is an interdisciplinary field at the intersection of biology, medicine, and quantitative sciences. Biomedical informatics researchers develop new methods to integrate and analyze vast amounts of data generated in the laboratory, clinical and translational research, clinical encounters, and population studies.
The goals of the division are to (1) promote excellence in biomedical informatics research, (2) collaborate with biomedical researchers in developing new quantitative methods that enable the formulation and testing of original hypotheses, (3) train the next generation of biomedical informatics specialists, and (4) interface with engineering, mathematics, information and computer science communities, serving as a hub for quantitative scientists focused on biomedical research.
Under the general supervision of the program manager, the Research Coordinator will assist in developing and executing research plans for accomplishing project objectives. Work direction will be provided by project managers. Current projects include developing tools to enhance research study participation and documentation, connecting clinical data warehouses, and building a data warehouse and tools to support clinical research.
The Research Coordinator participates in coordination of the submission of all materials required for new grant proposals, grant renewals and continuations, annual and quarterly progress reports, internal reports, and final reports. Assist with training of collaborating sites and other personnel. Interprets research protocols and coordinate tasks related to these protocols, coordinating the accuracy, timeliness, and efficient flow of data from collection to transmission. Analyzes and executes project data and deliverables. Also be responsible for ensuring all data are collected, documented, and stored according to sponsor requirements with created tools to implement these systems.
The Research Coordinator must be able to work both independently and as part of a team. The position will involve learning new techniques at the forefront of network technologies, clinical data exchange, and health information privacy. Will perform general research support such as coordinating research studies, monitoring and tracking deliverables, organizing research data and documents, ordering supplies, and organizing and attending regular team meetings.
Theoretical knowledge of biomedical informatics, computer science or related field as typically acquired by a Bachelor's Degree; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated experience organizing large volumes of data using creative tools, logs and databases created to use with multiple research projects.
Proven experience interpreting/coordinating research protocols and the corresponding data requirements. Demonstrated experience with human subjects research and processes.
Thorough knowledge of library referencing procedures, knowledge of PubMed searches and Reference Manager. Experience conducting literature reviews and internet searches for project-related clinical studies.
Demonstrated experience with grant proposal preparation, agency rules and regulations, particularly NIH.
Demonstrated experience setting up, recording, and editing webinar videos.
Excellent ability to communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and written. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including tact, diplomacy, and flexibility.
Ability to advise and direct the work of student workers and interns. Ability to work successfully with a wide range of people with varying perspectives and needs. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
Proficient use with computer programs such as Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, Power Point, Project), Adobe (Photoshop, Acrobat, Illustrator), EndNote or equivalent, SharePoint, Joomla or equivalent, and Camtasia or equivalent.
Demonstrated experience with website content management.
Proven ability to provide support and administer user accounts for a software application.
Demonstrated ability to train associated personnel in research procedures and data collection.
Outstanding writing and editing skills using knowledge of conventions of academic style, English grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Ability to re-write text that is ambiguous, unorganized or grammatically incorrect.
Strong decision making skills. Ability to use independent judgment and discretion to quickly set priorities and establish new procedures when needed. Ability to research, analyze, recommend, communicate, and implement solutions. Must function independently with minimal direction.
Solid organizational skills. Ability to manage a large volume of work efficiently and meet deadlines with frequent interruptions and changing priorities. Ability to develop, organize, and track projects and coordinate complex activities requiring a high level of accuracy and meticulous attention to detail.
Experience with event planning, outreach, and social media marketing.
