The Department of Mechanical Engineering is an academic operation encompassing teaching and research. Fiscal responsibilities include the management of an annual expenditure in excess of $10 million from a variety of state, federal, and gift fund sources. The department supports 26 faculty and non-senate academics, postdocs, graduate students, research personnel, and administrative staff. As an experienced research administrator, provide leadership and high-level administrative and technical support for contract and grant post-award administration, accounting, financial management, and reporting responsibilities requiring a thorough understanding of complex regulations. Responsible for complex awards that may involve multiple investigators, option years, and/or multiple sub award recipients. Serve as liaison for faculty and department between Research and Economic Development office and Extramural Fund Accounting. Guide and mentor less experienced staff. Perform complex budget/resource analysis including forecasting, retrieving data from campus financial systems, organizing and validating data, and preparing comprehensive reports for principal management on an ad hoc basis. Maintains fiscal integrity for all extramural/intramural funds and accounts ensuring they are in an auditable/reportable condition. Minimum Requirements Maintains current knowledge of compliance regulations in all areas of research administration.
Demonstrated competence in the use of spreadsheet and database software in financial analysis, fiscal management and financial reports.
Thorough understanding of research administration guidelines of Federal and non-Federal sponsors supporting research and educational activities, preferably in a university environment.
Demonstrated knowledge of effective grant funding processes, procedures and techniques.
Ability to maintain independent judgment; strong organization and communication skills; and a customer service focus across broad and diverse subject areas.
Ability to manage significant volume of transactions.
Thorough knowledge of applicable compliance requirements related to use of human or animal subjects in research, financial conflict of interest, biosafety, etc.
Ability to perform complex financial analysis and customized reporting.
Demonstrated knowledge of generally accepted accounting, fiscal and reporting principles.
Strong writing skills in a variety of styles to draft persuasive text for a variety of audiences while ensuring adherence to funding sponsor's guidelines.
Preferred Qualifications Demonstrated experience using UCR financial systems and research applications.
Extensive knowledge of UC System wide and campus Contacts and Grants policies and procedures.
Knowledge of UC Policies and procedures and on-line campus financial systems.
Experience working for an institution of higher education.
