Departmental Overview

For more than a century, the Geography Department at Berkeley has been a leading center of scholarship about earth's landscapes and human relationships to the environment. Our inquiries encompass a wide range of topics, from the economies and cultures of cities and built landscapes, to tropical climates and the flow of polar ice sheets. We combine rigorous empirical work with deeply conceptual theoretical analyses, always recognizing the importance of both spatial processes and accumulated histories. We use geographic analyses to illuminate the abiding problems of the modern world.


Responsibilities
  • Curriculum management utilizing the various processes in the Student Information System (SIS) as needed.
  • Academic Advising for undergraduate (primary) and graduate (backup/ secondary) programs: Advises faculty on departmental/school/college and university policies and procedures; reviews students' progress and advises students and faculty on requirements for degree/program completion; identifies students with progression problems and recommends interventions; participates in curriculum planning in collaboration with chair and manager, and with other departments. Advises visiting international and intercampus students.
  • Coordinates public communications of events and departmental news via the department website and social media, sending emails to other campus units to promote events such as the department Colloquium that happen throughout the academic year. Organizes the collection of notable information for periodic newsletters to alumni, colleagues, interested parties and potential donors. Also is in charge of planning and implementing complex, high-visible student events, such as  commencement and Cal Day.
  • Student Conduct: Responsible for interpreting campus policies and advising students and faculty on student conduct, student grievances, disputes, and issues regarding discrimination.
  • Curriculum Planning: Makes curriculum recommendations to chair and faculty, to ensure students' progress through course sequences, avoiding conflicts, and ensuring compliance with campus-wide policies. Assures that COCI policies are
  • Career Counseling: Advises students on the job market process, and the standards and norms specific to the student's field of study; advises on summer internship programs; develops and maintains network of departments and regional firms interested in hiring summer students. Organizes job workshop.
  • Plans, designs, and provides workshops for students, such as information about the campus, or academic strategies and enrichment programs. Plans and conducts orientations for new students.

Required Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
  • Can quickly learn University-specific computer application programs and can quickly learn University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
  • Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
  • Ability in problem identification, reasoning.
  • Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
  • Interpersonal skills. Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Salary & Benefits

This is a monthly paid (exempt) position. Annual salary will be commensurate with experience.
