The Office of TRIO Programs provides pre-college programs that aim to prepare and motivate high school students to pursue a higher education. The TRIO Programs are federally-funded through 5-year grants from the U.S. Department of Education. The High School Advisor (HSA) travels to target high schools to meet with participants. In addition, the HSA assists in the planning and coordination of events such as field trips, Saturday Sessions, and the summer program. The Upward Bound grants are currently in year 4 of 5 and this position is subject to extension based on the availability of continued grant funding and program needs. Special Conditions Special Condition Requirement Must be able to pass a Department of Justice and FBI background check. Required Abilty to travel to on and off campus locations for presentations, site visits as required to meet programs requirments and conferences. Required Ability to work occassional evenings and wekends as scheduled. Minimum Requirements Ability to maintain cooperative relationships with school district administrators, school counselors, principals, teachers, and community contacts.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Basic knowledge of high school graduation and college entrance requirements.
Basic knowledge of higher education institutions (UC, CSU, CC, etc.), and the ability to explain procedures to youth, parents, and school representatives.
Basic knowledge of academic programs, including curricula and admissions requirements at higher education institutions.
Basic knowledge and understanding of K-14 education.
Basic knowledge working with a diverse student population, and sensitivity to culture, race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation and socio-economic status.
Preferred Qualifications Proven ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with diplomacy and tact.
Demonstrated ability to conceptualize, plan, and help coordinate educational programs that meet specific needs for program participants, per federal grant objectives.
