Product Development Engineer Role Summary The Product Development Engineer- UX & HMI Concepts is:

  • A strong advocate of our products and proactively focuses his/her efforts on developing, documenting and submitting localization, product improvement and conceptual topics to our internal customers and stakeholders.
  • Responsible for managing test schedules with internal staff, and tracks and reports results to Project Leaders.
  • Liaison between ECC – Product Validation, domestic and international customers and stakeholders.
  • This open position is part of a team that focuses on the pre-series and series development support of electronic/electronic systems with particular relevance to the US and Canadian markets. People most suited for this position are able to derive technical systems from market-driven ideas, assertively work with suppliers building trust and finding common ground solutions, and work well in a multi-disciplined environment.
Role Responsibilities Lead and coordinates integration, validation and product improvement activities for embedded vehicle products Product localization, improvements and concepts (HALO)
  • Work with Functional owners and Product Validation Engineers to collect, document, filter and develop product localization and improvement topics before submitting them to our stakeholders in Germany.
  • Manage, coordinate and develop concept creation for pre-series infotainment products while working cross-functionally with the UX design team for creating sketches and mock-ups.
  • Organize, conduct and support execution of design research studies, UX / UI and benchmarking workshops and clinics with a strong focus on product improvement.
  • Sync-up with Quality, Function Owners and Project leaders back in HQ and in Germany.
  • Keep up to date with trends, research studies, and consumer expectations from consumption of third-party reports, datasets, and news articles. Track and filter research releases and conferences relevant for the team.
Product Validation (HMI / UX)
  • Synchronization of test content with project leaders, functional owners and quality departments
  • Proactively provide regular status updates to PL and stakeholders
  • Coordinate local validation planning and activities with Functional Owners and Product Validation Leads
  • Planning of test-drives and test assignments
  • Test execution and ticket management
  • Updating of vehicle/test environments
  • Assignment of work instructions to Vehicle, Methods & Tooling team
  • Component coordination and sourcing
  • Reporting to Project Leader status of:
  • Test coverage, Test Statistics and Quality of Testing
  • Test Reporting and Synchronization with PL and Project Stakeholders, including weekly test reports


Requirements

Qualifications Years of Experience
  • 5-7 years as a Systems engineer for an Automotive/Aerospace/Transportation OEM or Tier-1 supplier – proven record of start-to-finish lead coordination role.
Education Required
  • Bachelor's in Engineering (Electrical, Electronics, Mechatronics or Automotive) or Design (UX/UI, industrial or product)
  • Master's in Engineering, Business Administration, Psychology, Human Factors, UX/UI preferred
Skills
  • Excellent knowledge and proven record of having worked with complex infotainment systems and poses good understanding of one or several of the following functions: radio (AM/FM, SXM, hybrid radio), smartphone technologies (Android and iOS), online services, navigation systems (onboard, hybrid, online) and Intelligent Speech Systems (onboard, hybrid, online).
  • Good understanding of product localization activities (European product going into the North American Market).
  • Experience conducting UX / UI and human factors clinics and workshops
  • Has held a validation coordination role throughout entire projects (conception, planning, execution and closeout).
  • Give clear and unbiased assessment of project status and needs to partners, stakeholders and project leaders.
  • Deep understanding of UX / HMI validation cycles.
  • Knowledge of product development processes and project coordination activities, deliverables, and milestones.
  • Analytical and conceptual thinking – using logic and reason.
  • Proven problem solving skills knowledge and experience on the job.
  • Able to work in a dynamic, multi-disciplinary, time-line and target oriented work environment.
  • Excellent communication skills – presentation, written and interpersonal. To present validation results and concept to mid and upper management.
  • Able to continuously question and challenge the status-quo, always documenting and applying the lessons learned.
  • Team player with good collaboration and integration skills – joining people, processes and systems.
  • California State driving license.
Required Skills General

Product Definition
  • Comfortable forming and articulating the big picture on where an industry is heading and creating product concepts and/or improvements.
  • Prior experience defining HMI concepts
  • Experience gathering and organizing requirements and writing HMI test specifications.
  • Ability to plan/review HMI concept designs, test strategies, test cases etc.
  • Able to understand and engage in market oriented product development.
Project Management
  • Has held a project coordination role throughout entire projects (planning, execution, close-out)
  • Manage timelines, test resources, test specifications.
  • Manage and document localization, improvement and concept creation topics.
  • Able to work in a dynamic, time-line bound and target oriented work environment
Leadership
  • Effective public speaker – comfortable presenting complex technical information in front of technical and non-technical audiences at all levels of the organization
  • Effective at communicating with teams across cultures and in different times zones
  • Able to continuously question and challenge the status-quo, always applying the lessons learned
Desired Skills

Work Flexibility Ability to work flexible hours required to conduct research studies, customer clinics, and attend conferences and workshops.
