Role Summary:

An Agile Technical Business Analyst (ATBA) is part of a highly collaborative agile team on project and product development where many members out the scrum team may be at different locations. This is an integral role in product development by ensuring the organizations needs are articulated in the user story acceptance criteria consumed by the Agile Scrum Team. In this role, the ATBA will practice fundamentals of requirements gathering, system conceptual process design, and scope definition. The ATBA will review, analyze and evaluate business systems and user needs and be responsible in facilitating the shared understanding of business processes to articulate in user scenario driven stories. Work with the product owner by writing and defining the acceptance criteria for the user stories included in the backlog. Inputs will be impactful to the overall business strategy of the program supported.

Role Responsibilities:

Requirements Identification and Management – 75%

  • Work with the product owner for eliciting epics and user stories, maintaining and grooming the product backlog (master story list)
  • Work with the product owner by writing and defining the acceptance criteria for the user stories
  • Translate business objectives into system requirements using powerful analysis and modeling tools to aid in gap identification
  • Understand the business domain objectives including how the business operates, what the major business processes are, the metrics important to the business, and how to improve the processes from a business perspective.
  • Collaborate with product and development team to shape and form the scope, associated plans, and estimates to deliver business value
  • Responsible to obtain necessary signoffs through story lifecycle
  • Analysis activities include:
    • Studying requirements feasibility to determine if the requirement is viable technically, operationally, and economically
    • Assessing requirement risks and constraints and modifying requirements to mitigate identified risks
    • Modeling requirements at the appropriate usage, process, or detailed structural level to restate and clarify them
    • Evolution of requirements as the product/project development matures
    • Identifying and incorporating non-functional requirements into technical requirement stories
    • Identifying related user stories and epics, grouping them into themes as necessary, documenting the interrelationship, and associated business process flows as necessary. The interrelationship of user stories and epics should be well understood and the implementation of stories across different functional areas may require some planning and coordination so that they are consistently implemented and provide a mechanism for identifying any inconsistencies and/or missing functionality.
    • Integrate needs of different stakeholders to produce an overall solution
  • Creating and/or maintaining system specifications and requirements repository:
    • Derived from story details and acceptance criteria, historical legacy documentation, product specific nonfunctional requirement, including the precise attributes used for history, explanation, selection, filtering, validations, and traceability
    • Context, process flow, and/or system diagrams
    • Mapping documentation (i.e. data integration mapping and table structures) including sample artifacts (i.e. XML) that would also support active user stories
    • Requirement Change history for traceability and audit purposes
  • Participates and contributes to Agile activities, and at times may facilitate, including Sprint planning meetings, retrospectives, demo reviews, and daily standups
  • Supports the Product Manager in triaging bugs reported by users
  • At times, may do the role of ScrumMaster or Product Owner role for a project
Product Support and Strategy Planning – 25%
  • Application Product support including incident management, root cause analysis, change management, and contributing planning product optimization and roadmap strategies
  • Contribute to the strategic planning of information systems and technology direction to meet business objectives


Experience: Required
  • B.S., B.A. in Computer Science or related discipline, Business Administration, Finance, Accounting or equivalent job experience.
Education: Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Marketing, Finance, Economics, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, Operations Research or similar quantitative field
  • Advanced Degree a plus
  • Scrum Certification
  • BA Certification
General Skills:
  • Solid understanding and expert experience in both agile/scrum and traditional project development methodologies and the proven ability to blend them together in the right proportions to fit a project and business environment
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills (both written and verbal) and sharp business acumen; ability to communicate and present to a wide variety of audiences, both business and technical
  • Demonstrated record of strong leadership and motivational skills resulting in quality products, performance driven and high morale within their delivery teams
  • Ability to break down major issues and problems into workable pieces; see whole situation behind a problem or issue; able to understand causes, effects and implications using critical thinking
  • Negotiation and conflict resolution skills; ability to create an open environment where conflicts as to project priorities, scope and requirement decisions can be aired and resolved in an objective manner
  • Demonstrated knowledge of requirements and business analysis with hands-on experience and proficiency using requirement solicitation methodologies and tools and requirement management tools (JIRA, TFS, JAMA)
  • Demonstrated capability to work on several projects simultaneously with different team resources
  • Intermediate to Advanced Excel/SQL/XML skills for data manipulation and analysis
  • Intermediate to Advanced diagram and modeling experience (Context, cross-functional, process and data flow, UX Mockups and Frames)
