  Job Description: 

The Registered Nurse demonstrates critical thinking skills, scientific judgment, and leadership in the anticipation and planning for the care of the surgical patient. The Registered Nurse is responsible and accountable for the planning, directing, and provision of nursing care to patients (adult to geriatrics) in accordance with recognized nursing techniques, procedures, established standards, and administrative policies. As a Registered Nurse in the OR, some of your task and responsibilities will be to:

  • Demonstrate awareness or opportunities for performance improvement in unit activities and assists with the development of action plans.

  • Skillful in setting priorities: · Performs specific nursing actions in a logical sequence. · Anticipates needs of the surgical team · Appropriately utilizes professional and ancillary personnel · Uses critical thinking and sound judgment · Responds to potential /actual emergency situations

  • Review patient's records for pertinent info. · Verifies accuracy of consents · Verifies H&P &/or consultation · Reviews and reports abnormal data

  • Respect patients rights: · Provides for privacy by maintaining confidentiality · Identifies spiritual and ethical beliefs

  • Provide psychosocial support to the surgical patient: · Comforts patient prior to induction through quiet relaxed atmosphere · Explains sequence of events · Informs patient of any delay, ensures notification of family members

  • Properly positions the surgical patient: · Knows physiological consequences of positioning and individual patient limitations · Maintains patient dignity · Applies principle of body alignment and adapts them to varying situations during positioning · Pads pressure points as needed · Monitors patient area under contact pressure

  • Perform duties in a cost-effective manner.

  • Perform actions that demonstrate accountability: · Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability to change · Responds in a positive manner to constructive criticism · Demonstrates tact and understanding when dealing with patients team members and other disciplines · Practices within ethical and legal guidelines · Seeks opportunity for continued learning · Ensures timely and accurate communication of patient information with all members of the health care team

  • Patient Education: Assess patient, family, and significant other's educational needs in collaboration with other disciplines. Implements initial and ongoing education relevant to these needs.

  • Obtain specific supplies&/or equipment: · Checks preference cards prior to case · Has supplies/equipment in the room before case · Makes arrangements to obtain special supplies · Checks all equipment/instrument for proper functioning and completeness prior · Has a working knowledge of the equipment/instrumentation or seeks assistance · Uses supplies judiciously and in a cost-effective manner

  • Demonstrate self-motivation in performing job duties and increasing knowledge base and professional growth.

  • Create/maintain sterile field at all times: · Keeps sterile field 12” from unsterile items · Faces sterile field · Does not walk between two sterile fields · Does not reach over, touch sterile field · Sets up sterile field immediately prior to case and does not leave unattended · Identifies and immediately corrects breaks in technique · Confines, contains, and properly disposes of contaminated items · Functions within designated dress code; hair covering, jewelry

  • Consistently displays behavior that enhances the public image of the organization/department, as evidenced by professional care of patients and courteous behavior toward the public, other departments, physicians, and co-workers.

  • Conduct in-depth patient interview prior to surgery: · Properly ID patient, site, procedure · Identifies allergies · Observes and notes sensory perception, physical condition · Assesses fears, anxiety, level of knowledge, and educational needs. · Competent to participate in patient/family teaching; teaching needs and teaching effectiveness · Aware of religious and/or cultural beliefs

  • Check sterility of supplies: · Examines sterile items for expiration date/indicator strip · Correctly inspects sterile items for integrity · Properly delivers sterile supplies to field · Ascertains appropriate temp and time of sterilizer prior to removing items and properly documents

  • Awareness and Practice of Standard Precautions: · Wears appropriate eye protection · Reports and follows through appropriately on all hazardous exposures

  • Aware of specific physician preferences: · Maintains and updates surgeons' cards · When picking cases, assures all routine supplies are pulled, identifies as needed items · Takes initiative to ascertain new surgeon's preferences/needs

  • Properly prepares specimen – type/size of container Care of Instruments/equipment: · Handles delicate instruments carefully · Reports dull, malfunctioning instruments · Able to problem-solving, troubleshoot and take corrective action in care of handling instruments · Returns all equipment and supplies to the proper location

  • Properly handle specimens: Properly documents specimens on Record and Pathology slip · Properly labels specimens · Uses appropriate lab slips for all specimens · Properly prepares specimen – type/size of container

  • Provide a safe environment for the surgical patient: · Monitors environmental hazards · Monitors and controls the environment: traffic patterns, temp and humidity · Reports improper functioning equipment and follows through on repairs · Properly places safety strap, ESU · Performs instrument, sponge, and needle counts as per policy & procedure. · Actively participates in site/procedure verification process · Identifies and labels all medications.

Qualifications

  • Licensed Registered Nurse in the state of Florida or Recognized Compact Licensure (subject to Florida State Licensing Requirements, including/not limited to ongoing eligibility and duration provisions).
  • American Red Cross or American Heart Association Advanced Life Support Course (ALS or ACLS) and certification.
  • American Red Cross or American Heart Association Basic Life Support Course (BLS or BCLS) and certification. 
  • Minimum of one (1) year of Operating Room experience required.
  • Graduate from a school of Nursing.
  • Associate (2 years) Degree (ASN) required.
  • Bachelor (4 years) Degree (BSN) preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with physicians, patients, and team members.
