Shift Time Schedule: 6:00 pm - 6:30 am

Days: Variable Days Monday-Friday, Every third weekend

Salary Scale: $15.54-21.50

POSITION SUMMARY: Administer direct nursing care to patients under the direction of an RN. Assists patients with day to day activities; assists nursing staff in the care of patients, must have critical thinking skills as well as able to handle multiple issues and prioritize effectively.

EDUCATION: Approved CNA Classes. CNA Certificate. Current on CNA registry. BLS.

EXPERIENCE: 6 months experience of Direct Patient Care preferred, not required. Must have a working knowledge of computers and data entry; excellent customer service and communication.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assures that personal hygiene needs of all patients of all ages are met: bathing, oral care, perineal care, hair care, nail care, shaving, and skin care.
  • Answers call lights promptly and refer questions or problems to RN assigned to that patient, if staff member unavailable will report to charge RN or another nursing staff member.
  • Performs treatments and procedures as directed by the RN within the limits
    of the individual's training (ambulation, warm packs, etc.).
  • Collects and records information pertinent to the patient's status. Takes vital signs. Empties and measures urine drainage tubes and bags as directed by RN. Notifies RN of significant changes in the patient's condition. Record nutritional intake and I & O.
  • Delivers and picks up patient trays, opening items and assisting patient as needed
  • Makes regular patient rounds; hourly rounds responsibilities are shared with the nursing staff.
  • Assists in admission and discharge/transfer of patient as directed by RN and according to procedure. Initiates treatments as directed. Collects information (vital signs, personal information), as needed, depending on time of admission. Cares for patient's valuables according to procedure with assistance of RN. Assists patient in preparing for discharge: dressing, packing, accompanying discharged patient to vehicle. Reports significant unusual findings to RN.
  • Follows procedures to assure that supply stocks are ready for use. Records supply usage of patient supplies using the current charging system.
  • Adheres to standards of safety and infection control in delivery of patient care. Maintains a clean, orderly patient unit for each patient. Assures that isolation principles are understood and carried out.
  • Maintains awareness of the patient's and family's need for emotional support and understanding. Communicates pertinent psychosocial information to RN.
  • Listens to patient's concerns and make sure the patient and family understand treatments and procedures alerting the RN of patient/family questions.
  • Requires a positive individual who is flexible with excellent clinical and customer service skills, has the ability to work well within a team; exhibits excellent communication skills, as well as having a commitment to teamwork and team problem solving in a solution oriented manner.
  • Attends required in services, yearly education days and mandatory departmental meetings ensuring that all regulatory accreditation and clinical competency standards are met for Boone County Hospital and the State Iowa.
  • Maintains a positive attitude towards co-workers, patients and visitors.
  • Performs other duties as assigned and as the individual is qualified to perform them.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:

  • Exhibits cooperation and a positive attitude toward other hospital departments.
  • Assists in transport to other departments.
  • Maintains current BLS training.
  • Assists in training and orientation of new personnel.
  • Assists nursing staff in other areas of the hospital as requested and qualified when need arises.
  • Provides a supportive environment for students.
WORKING CONDITIONS:

Clean, well lit, heated and air conditioned area. Exposure to unpleasant sights, smells and infectious diseases, blood and body fluids, and occasionally to radiation. Work is performed in the desk area and on the unit. Involves contact with patients. Interaction with others is constant and interruptive. Work schedule is 12 hours shifts 6am to 6:30 pm and 6 pm to 6:30 am. Full time is 72 hours every two weeks. Overtime dependent upon the needs of the department. Holiday and weekend work required. Hours may vary depending on departmental staffing needs. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

Vision must be correctable to view computer screens and read printed information. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.

Hearing must be in the normal range for telephone contacts and other conversations. Individuals must be able to hear and distinguish alarms and bells.
