The City of Asheville is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Parks and Recreation Director. The Parks and Recreation Director reports to the City Manager and also supported by an Assistant City Manager. Within the department, this position directly supervises three Focus Area Managers. The ideal candidate for this position is forward thinking, welcoming of challenges and hard work, collaborative, empathetic, approachable and experienced in all aspects of parks and recreation management including community engagement methods. The Asheville Parks & Recreation Department has a budget of nearly $13.3 million and maintains 54 public parks of various sizes and types, 6 miles of greenways, 10 community centers, numerous programs for youth, seniors and outdoor enthusiasts, a comprehensive athletics program, and many facilities that provide resources for a range of activities. The department has 117 full time staff members and hires over 100 temporary/seasonal staff per year.
The Parks & Recreation Department comprises 3 focus areas: Asset Management, Resource Management, and Community and Recreation Management.

Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Parks and Recreation, or a related field required; supplemented by ten years of progressively responsible experience in parks and recreation development, programming, and management, to include lead or supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this position. Must possess and maintain a valid Certified Parks and Recreation Professional certification (or have the ability to obtain within 1 year from hire date). A valid North Carolina driver's license (or ability to obtain) is required.
Salary range: $101,212.80 - $151,819.20 DOQ, commensurate with experience, plus a very competitive fringe benefits package.
