To support our extraordinary team who build great products and contribute to our growth, we're looking to add a/an  Senior Optical Engineer located in Milpitas, CA.  

Reporting to the Sr. Director, Optical Engineering the  Senior Optical Engineer who has diversified optical engineering experiences which will allow them to quickly make an impact in our multi-discipline, multi-project and results-oriented team working environment. What a typical day looks like:

  • Define, refine and qualify optical system performance specifications. 
  • Conduct the conceptual and detailed designs of various optical products at module and system levels. 
  • Tolerance analysis, GD&T, error budgeting, flow up and flow down of requirements. 
  • Hold design reviews throughout the design process. 
  • Manage and hands-on performance of various optical tests at the component, module, and system levels in an optical metrology laboratory. 
  • Investigate and quantify the benefits of new optical measurement techniques as they are incorporated into the productions. 
  • Work closely with customers, manufacturing engineers, and suppliers to resolve any issues related to performance, quality, and cost.  
  • Review and manage customer's complete specifications for optical components and assemblies. 
  • Manage optical validation and qualification process for components, sub-assemblies and assemblies.  
  • Help define best-fit algorithms and test processes to control optical module quality in a high-volume manufacturing environment. 
  • Participate in sourcing and procurement of optical parts. 
  • Participate in advanced product and manufacturing technology innovation initiatives. 

The experience we're looking to add to our team:

  • Bachelor or Master's degree in optics/physics/engineering with 7+ years' industry experience related to optical engineering 
  • In-depth understanding of the technologies used in the various optical products (e.g., cameras, displays, projectors, scanners, distance sensing, etc.) 
  • In-depth understanding of optical sub-systems, including materials, filters, sources, coatings, displays, lenses, etc. 
  • Experience writing optical design specifications and test plans 
  • Proficiency with Zemax optical design and analysis tools, scientific method, experimental process, root cause analysis, tolerance analysis 
  • Experience with process and assembly design, qualification, and release to manufacturing of complex, integrated, optical sub-systems 
  • Experience with various optical metrology test equipment and tools, including the optical bench tools, collimators, colorimeter, Imatest, etc. 
  • A plus for this position is the ability to develop and oversee photonic module manufacturing processes, including fiber attachment and photonic active alignment. 
  • Proficiency with mechanical fixture design, 3D modeling, prototyping, development, and project leadership is a plus. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are critical.  Strong organization skills and data analysis skills are required.  
  • Experience with mentoring technicians and technical project management is highly desired.
