Through our partnership with the National Institutes of Health, Kelly Government Solutions offers administrative, IT, engineering, scientific, and healthcare professionals the opportunity to work with the leading medical research center in the world.  We are seeking an Rodent Neuroscience Technician at the National Institutes of Health in Baltimore, MD


This is a long-term contract position which offers:

TASKS/SERVICES. The contractor shall: 

  1. Perform rat behavioral phenotyping, including, but not limited to, watermaze, novel odor recognition, social memory assessment. 
  2. Perform biological sample collection, preparation, and storage. 
  3. Analyze data generated from behavioral phenotyping and maintain databases of rodent colonies, generated data and biosamples.
  4. Support design-based quantitative morphometric studies using stereological methods
  5. Perform a variety of specialized tissue fixation, embedding, sectioning and staining techniques.
  6. Update animal protocol through the submission of amendments and submission of new animal protocols to ensure necessary animal work for experiments. 
  7. Handle, dissect and euthanize animals. 
  8. Assist with and perform animal survival surgery, including intraspinal injections. 
  9. Handle, dissect and euthanize animals.
  10. Perform analysis of animal tissues; prepare frozen slices and paraffin sections, appropriately stained to demonstrate normal and abnormal structures.
  11. Work with staff to process tissue for immunohistochemistry. 
  12. Update and maintain laboratory notebooks and databases; collect, analyze and interpret data. 
  13. Collect, review, research, and analyze large datasets; perform experiments, utilizing various statistical applications and methods; and interpret data, assemble data into figures, and enter data into a database. 
  14. Collate, edit and archive electronic and paper laboratory files, notebooks and databases. 
  15. Participate and collaborate in the preparation of scientific publications for peer reviewed journals based on the results. 
  16. Document information on procedures, modifications and methods for input into final publication and presentations of findings at meetings. 
  17. Document all laboratory procedures, experiments and results; maintain and update laboratory notebooks and databases.


REQUIREMENTS. The contractor must have: 
  1. BS or BA degree in Neuroscience, Psychology or related field. 
  2. Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG)
  3. Experience with: Extensive rat handling experience, Biospecimen collection - blood, feces, etc., Rat behavioral phenotyping experience, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan acquisition experience, Necropsy experience
  4. Experience in biological sample collection, preparation, and storage, Prepare cytology slides, Maintain supply inventory, Surgery experience - tumor removal
  5. Strong oral and written communication skills
  6. Experience with Software such as: Diagnostic &/or behavioral equipment, Outlook, Word, Excel
