7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday-Friday

Job Summary

Provides the leadership role in developing and managing the implementation of proactive employee safety and health programs that protect the organization and individuals against the financial and physical impact of loss arising from, but not limited to: employee injury/illness and workers' compensation.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or related discipline. 
Minimum Years of Experience: 4 years of experience in environmental health and safety, occupational safety, employee health and safety or related field.
Substitutable Education & Experience: Bachelor's Degree and 4 Years of Experience can be substituted for an Associate's Degree in Occupational Safety or related discipline and 15 years of experience managing an environmental health and safety, occupational safety, employee health and safety or related field for a medium to large healthcare organization. 
Required Certifications/Licensure: Maintain a valid South Carolina Driver's License.
Required Training:

Extensive knowledge of federal, state and local laws, codes and safety regulations (e.g., DHEC/OSHA/CMS) and guidance (e.g. CDC, NIOSH).

Knowledge of principles and practices of safety program development and implementation;

Knowledge of recent developments, current literature and information related to worker health and safety, workers' compensation injury prevention and risk management.

Strong analytical skills needed with demonstrated ability to interpret data trends and develop the necessary action plans;

Strong organizational skills;

Knowledge of office procedures, methods and equipment, including personal computer, copy/fax machine and telephone;

Proficiency in basic computer skills, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Essential Functions
  • Able to travel regularly locally (Community medical centers and practices) and occasionally with overnights (conferences).
  • Recommend and implement goals and objectives for workers' compensation injury prevention and risk management activities.
  • Conduct safety audits and ensure program compliance with applicable rules and regulations. Performs industry-specific hazard analysis and risk mitigation.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of activities.
  • Maintain and work discreetly with confidential information.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports. Assist in development and implementation of ongoing process to create, review and update Occupational Health and Safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to effectively present to, and train both small and large groups.
  • Identifies common safety/health hazards within the organization's operations and develops effective strategies to control, eliminate, and prevent injury/illness, physical, and/or financial loss caused by various hazards and exposures. Works in conjunction with the Director of Employee Health/Workers' Compensation Claims Manager on strategic and tactical basis to prevent and reduce hazards and losses. 
  • Coordinates all OSHA required employee training and testing.
  • Functions as a member of the Safety Committee and Environment of Care (EOC) Committee.
  • Anticipate, recognize, evaluate, prevent and control hazards to better ensure a safe workplace and implement best practices.
  • Reviews all new designs, renovations, and new construction, and makes recommendations to meet regulatory standards and to minimize employee/visitor injuries.
  • Champions a corporate culture, in which safety and health become intrinsic values at all levels within the organization.
  • Assist with workers' compensation injuries. Investigates employee claims, statements, photos and records. Attends settlement hearings.
  • Uses collaboration skills to facilitate sharing of information and cooperation with various stakeholders to problem solve and achieve the desired outcome.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Maintains awareness of new developments in the field of risk management; incorporates new developments as appropriate into programs.
  • Develops, implements, manages and measures various internal safety programs/activities and compliance activities related to, but not limited to, DHEC, OSHA and other governmental safety regulations. Devises and coordinates regulatory compliance activities, safety meetings, training programs and any additional information or materials required for such.
  • Assists with formulation, implementation and management of general safety policies and procedures to be followed by Lexington Medical Center (LMC) that are in compliance with local, state and federal OSHA/CMS and state DHEC rules and regulations including addressing non-compliance issues. Coordinates preparation and response to audits and regulatory site inspections.
  • Coordinates loss control strategies and activities with the Director of Risk Management, Director of Safety and other departments to effectively and efficiently reduce exposures and losses. Develop and implement an Occupational Health and Safety loss mitigation review program to identify and reduce the number of unsafe acts and unsafe working conditions within the organization 
  • Coordinates and participates in the investigation of accidents and near-misses to determine root causes. Partners with management and other departments to facilitate corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Develops training program for minimal lift equipment and does competency skill checks on employees using minimal lift equipment annually.
  • Does job site analysis and assist managers in determining the physical demands of a position upon request.
  • Analyzes accident reports and trends to ensure proper actions are performed to prevent reoccurrence. Establishes key tactics, metrics and reports to ensure full communication of successes, gaps and trends, to all levels of the organization.
  • Maintains OSHA 300A and 300 Logs for the organization.
  • Designs, implements and maintains Respiratory Protection Program. This includes policy development, annual fit testing, and training at multiple locations.
  • Audits safety/health programs for compliance with company standards, government regulations and adequacy. Works closely with internal staff and third party providers during this process.
  • Attends and participates in professional group meetings as required.
  • Ability to interact and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
  • Analyzes, measures, and benchmarks (internal and external) accident trends, costs, and patterns in order to prioritize and formulate correction action(s) metrics, as well as tracking systems that achieve a measurable reduction in accident frequency and costs.
  • Complies with all policies and procedures.
  • Assumes additional related responsibilities and projects as needed.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
