About MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's Surgical Specialties/Orthopedics & Limb Salvage – 6 Main
6 Main is a newly renovated 30-bed Surgical Specialties Unit and is the largest unit at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. All of the rooms on 6 Main are private and offer continuous pulse oximetry. 6 Main nurses provide exceptional post-operative care in our fast-paced environment. Common surgical procedures include joint replacement, spinal surgery, foot and/or ankle surgery, urological procedures, reconstructive plastic surgery and wound management. 6 Main is notable for its collaborative interdisciplinary practice. Our licensed practical nurses and registered nurses work closely with physicians, nurse practitioners, physical therapists and clinical pharmacists, just to name a few. 6 Main is often described as a "family-like environment" in which nurses support one another and demonstrate outstanding teamwork. Clinical expertise, teamwork and a commitment to the profession of nursing define the nursing practice on 6 Main.

Position Summary
The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is a key member of the interdisciplinary team to deliver patient-centered acute nursing care to individuals with a variety of medical issues or who are preparing for or recovering from surgery. The LPN as a collaborative team member in partnership with and under the supervision of the registered nurse.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Organizes, prioritizes, and cares for groups of patients under the direction of the Registered Nurse.
  • Establish effective relationships with the patient/ family to facilitate the development a patient centered care plan unique to the individuals care needs.
  • Collaborates with other healthcare team members to implement a plan of care and education to maintain and restore health and prevent complications.
  • Provide patient and family education about measures of health promotion, maintenance, and restoration to promote comfort.
  • Provides direct nursing care to patients as assigned which includes collect assessment data, administration of medications, and performs activities of daily living including, among others bathing, mouth care, feeding patients, range of motion, walking patients and transporting patients, in accordance with Nursing Department/Hospital policies and procedures
  • Performs sterile and non sterile treatments in accordance with Hospital policy, including but not limited to: tube feedings, ostomy care, Foley catheter insertion/care, hang/monitor/regulate IV's, TPN and site care, maintenance of drainage tubes with/without pump or suction, chest physiotherapy, dressing changes and wound care, splinting (emergency department only), oxygen administration, suctioning, and blood/glucose monitoring
  • Reports changes in patient status to the RN and members of the health care team as they occur and communicate information in verbal and written reports that describe care delivered to the patient.
  • Collaborates with the RN on an on-going basis regarding effective nursing interventions and patient care.
  • Provides direction and supervision of the patient care associates, demonstrates professional judgement, problem solving techniques, time-management principles, and delegates appropriately.
  • Serve as an advocate for the patient and family.
  • Participates in the orientation of staff members/students as designated by the Nurse Manager and participates in continuing education.
  • Contributes to the implementation of the unit objectives and performance improvement activities.
  • Maintains a safe and orderly patient/unit environment.
  • Foster a healthy work environment within the practice setting and profession.
  • Participate in self and peer review.
  • Promote professional engagement.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • High School Diploma or GED required
    • Bachelor's degree Graduate of an accredited School of Practical Nursing. required or
    • completion of a pharmacology course

    Experience

    • 1-2 years experience within a Rehabilitation or acute setting required or
    • New graduates considered based on student clinical experiences

    Licenses and Certifications

    • LPN - Licensed Practical Nurse - State Licensure required and
    • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation required

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Knowledge of principles and skills needed for practical nursing to provide patient care and treatment.
    • Knowledge of examinations, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures.
    • Knowledge of medications and their effect on patients.
    • Ability to calculate dosages as needed.
    • Skill in administering a variety of treatments and medication, as directed.
    • Ability to take vital signs and maintain records Computer skills and aptitude, and prefer previous experience with EHR systems.
    • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to maintain a safe work environment.
    • Good interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patient, medical staff, and the public.
    • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
