General Summary of Position
Unit Highlights
Nurses on Unit 5E (Medical Oncology) care for many medical oncology diagnoses while upholding the Commission on Cancer Standards. We welcome patients from a variety of medical and surgical specialties.
This 21 bed unit is a great place to become an expert generalist, Certified Chemo nurse and a Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) as well as a Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (CMSRN). The staff and nurses on 5E are highly skilled, motivated, and committed to excellence.
We strive to provide safe, quality care by maintaining a patient-centered approach and leveraging multi-disciplinary collaboration. The cytoreductive surgery was developed at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. The 5E Nurses also provide nationally certified care to our bariatric surgical patient population.

Minimum Qualifications
Education
- Associate's degree in Nursing required
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred
- For new graduates hired with an Associate degree, employment with MedStar Washington Hospital Center is contingent upon enrollment into an accredited BSN program within one (1) year of employment, and continuing matriculation in the program to achieve a BSN within 5 years of the program start date. Proof of enrollment to be submitted to Nurse Leader.
Experience
- Prior clinical nursing experience preferred
Licenses and Certifications
- RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure in the District of Columbia required
- BLS - Basic Life Support required
- C-EFM - Electronic Fetal Monitoring from the National Certification Corporation (NCC) is required for Perinatal nurses (labor and delivery, antepartum, antenatal testing) within 12 months from date of hire. New graduate nurses or new to specialty nurses (labor and delivery, antepartum, antenatal testing) will have 15 months from date of hire to obtain the EFM certification.
