General Summary of Position
Assembles, installs, repairs, and maintains clinical patient care equipment and specialized equipment to include Surgical Lasers, Ventilators, Dialysis Equipment, etc. Performs highly skilled task of considerable difficulties.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Analyzes options in urgent repair situations and is able to suggest the most appropriate course of action. Recommends a second source when available. Identifies and recommends repair and spare parts.
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Coordinates special projects as directed by the Clinical Engineering Director. Performs modifications and upgrades on devices as directed by the manufacturer or department manager.
  • Drafts preventative maintenance procedures and makes corrections/changes to existing procedures.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts as required, and service improvement teams.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
  • Participates in service training of new technicians and medical and nursing staff concerning use and operation of medical and biomedical equipment.
  • Performs and/or coordinates the installation of new equipment, including vendor and contractor scheduling.
  • Performs complex repairs on sophisticated equipment and/or systems. May be required to be a resource for MedStar Health on specialty items.
  • Performs initial acceptance inspections on new equipment and completes all required paperwork.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Repairs and troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment, using all available resources; including: test equipment, service manuals, and hand tools. Is able to troubleshoot to the component level and solder on printed circuit boards. Maintains an accurate record of all work performed.
  • Responds to emergency situations in clinical areas and provides support as required and requested. Interacts with patient and clinical staff whenever appropriate. Treats all patient information strictly confidential.
  • Schedules and performs preventative maintenance inspections on medical devices and completes all associated paperwork in a timely and accurate manner. Is knowledgeable of applicable safety and electrical limits for health care equipment.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • Associate's degree required or
    • certificate in Biomedical Electronics required or
    • equivalent trade school required or
    • military biomedical training. required

    Experience

    • 5-7 years Experience in repair, troubleshooting of complex medical equipment to component level preferred

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Basic computer skills.
    • Ability to work independently with little supervision.
    • Verbal and written communication skills.
