Summary

The Sr. IT Portfolio Manager will be responsible for maturing the lean portfolio/project management framework across the IT organization to foster collaborative partnerships with IT and Business partners, and identify creative, cost-effective solutions to achieve strategic business value.

The Sr. IT Portfolio Manager combines an understanding of lean portfolio management principles with the existing technology portfolio, to develop value-oriented plans that guide proactive decision-making in order to manage unforeseen demands, constraints, risks, and dependencies inherent to Ryder's environment.

To accomplish this, the Sr. IT Portfolio Manager will maintain and support the development of project portfolio status reporting standards and oversee reporting of their portfolio to IT Leadership on key performance metrics, such as budget and schedule health, risks and mitigation plans, project/product intake, demand, and resource management processes.

Essential Functions

  • Solid understanding of accounting rules for expense and capital activities, manages portfolio budgets (range from $10M-$100M) and acts as a steward of the company to ensure budgets are best utilized to achieve stated scope and anticipated benefits are realized. Works with IT Finance to support labor forecasting and reporting needs on projects and programs within the portfolio. Evaluates past funding decisions against budgetary request to assess impact to planned budgets vs. actual expenditures and variances.
  • Build trusted and effective relationships with IT and Business partners in order to facilitate improved communication and create a collaborative partnership among portfolio stakeholders that enables resource demand planning, budget management, initiative strategic alignment, change management, and project pipeline planning decisions.
  • Contributes to strategic planning meetings and provides guidance and expertise on options, risks, cost vs. benefits, and impacts on departmental processes. Partners effectively with IT, Finance, and Business stakeholders to support capital expense planning, to build strong lean business cases for product and project funding / budgets, backlog management, pre-project planning, cost estimation, investment management, and business relationship management activities. Evaluate investment performance of the portfolio against stated goals, objectives, and key results in partnership with IT and Business partners.
  • Helps to guide value-driven development that aligns with the Objectives and Key Results of the organization, and monitors and reports on key performance indicators to tie results and return on investment back to overall vision.
  • Functions as a servant leader fostering Lean-Agile Continuous Delivery, promoting and coaching Lean-Agile principles, empowering individual teams to become self-managing, and fulfill their cross-functional potential. Provides ad-hoc coaching and guidance to Project Managers, Scrum Masters, Product Owners, and individual team members.
  • Define and implement portfolio management processes to support evidence-based decision making on IT investments and process improvements such as planning, data collection, analysis, prioritization, reporting, and governance. Maximizes portfolio performance though decisive leadership to optimize the allocation of financials and resources across project / programs, while balancing portfolio value versus overall risk.
  • Support the implementation and administration of the project portfolio management solution across the IT organization with the goal of ensuring alignment across IT and its partners, focuses on prioritization, program & project tracking, resource alignment across all IT initiatives, and improving the successful execution of IT initiatives. Creates mechanisms for regular process reviews and continuous process improvements to support Delivery Leads, Program and Project Managers within the portfolio to ensure adherence to Delivery Team governance and methodology.
  • Drive agility and improvement by managing risks and dependencies, escalates impediments to ensure portfolio delivery. Proactively and consistently communicates with the team, business owners, and leaders to ensure all impacted stakeholders understand risks, issues, and activities related to the portfolio. Manages and improves the flow of value through the portfolio by assessing and optimizing the practices associated with the team (DevOps, Product Management, Security, Architecture, etc.) in the Continuous Delivery Pipeline.

Additional Responsibilities

  • May be asked to support one or multiple projects or project functions, as bandwidth allows.
  • Work to guide and coach others (scrum leaders) about the ART and Lean-Agile practices.
  • Constantly refine and stay current with emerging themes in larger Agile community.
  • Participate in Portfolio and Program Management process improvement and standardization activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrate high level of emotional intelligence, be able to influence without authority, be an effective negotiator, manage conflict within the team, and communicate with various organizational levels, including cross-functionally, at the frontline, and with senior leadership.
  • Experience measuring team delivery, maturity, and performance and creating reporting metrics and dashboards that illustrate the flow of value on the performance and efficiency of the portfolio.
  • Highly developed strategic planning skills with a strong understanding of IT operating models and experience working with multiple teams to develop strategies and deliver solutions.
  • Experience leading multiple, complex workstreams and collaborates with various departments, including cross-interdependency projects, cross-functional and consultant team members assigned to several projects within a program, to ensure alignment to the portfolio.
  • Develops and delivers effective presentations.
  • Presents information and ideas to others in a succinct and impactful manner.
  • Demonstrated experience in organizing, planning and executing large-scale teams from conception through implementation.
  • Ability to lead and direct the work of department staff or project/product teams.
  • Advanced skills with communicating and delivering presentations to virtual, in-person, and ELT level audiences.
  • Experience working in different software procurement and deployment methodologies (Six Sigma and/or Agile experience is preferred).
  • Demonstrated experience utilizing project plans, enterprise resource management plans, issue logs, risk/mitigation strategies and well versed in Agile, project and portfolio management techniques, processes, methodologies, tools (exWorkfront, Planview, Clarizen, MS Office, Azure DevOps, etc.).
  • Strong ability to quickly adapt to shifting priorities and align activities to meet organizational goals.
  • Self-driven to excel in a fast-paced environment, work independently, with excellent time management and prioritization skills.
  • Accepts accountability and manages execution of individual and team results at corporate and divisional level.
  • Detailed oriented with excellent follow-up practices.
  • Solid understanding of IT estimation activities for small to large/complex initiatives and ensures efficient utilization of staff and non-labor resources
  • Technically savvy with ability to quickly learn new systems and effectively assume administrator responsibilities
  • Forge strong relationships with both the clients and project teams that will contribute to your growth and development
  • 3PL, Supply Chain, Logistics, and similar industry business knowledge / practices / processes beginner preferred

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required Information Technology, Computer Science, Business Management or related field of study, other majors to be considered on an individual basis.
  • Master's degree preferred Information Technology, Computer Science, Business Management or related field of study.
  • Seven (7) years or more IT Program/Project Management with demonstrated project portfolio management skills (project/product intake, resource planning, demand management, budget management, product management) with Delivery Team experience required.
  • Six (6) years or more process improvement or project management with at least 6+ years as a Portfolio Manager, Program Manager, or Delivery Lead required.
  • Three (3) years or more significant experience working in an Enterprise IT organization with multiple Agile Delivery Frameworks/Tools (e.g., Kanban, Scrum, Lean, SAFe, AzureDevOps, ServiceNow, Planview, or other similar ALM tools) required.
  • Three (3) years or more proven track record of leading agile transformations by successfully coaching and transitioning teams, programs, and portfolios at all organizational levels, including senior leadership preferred.
  • 3PL, Supply Chain, Logistics, and similar industry business knowledge / practices / processes beginner preferred.
  • SAFe Agilist (SA), SAFe Release Train Engineer (RTE), or SAFe Program Consultant, Certified Scrum Master (CSM), Certified Scrum Professional (CSP).
  • PMI Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification and/or PMI-ACP.
  • SAFe Lean Portfolio Management 5.1 or higher (LPM); Portfolio Performance Management (PPM),

Salary is determined based on internal equity; internal salary ranges; market

data/ranges; applicant's skills; prior relevant experience; certain degrees or

certifications, etc.

The salary for this position ranges from $130,000.00 to $150,000.00. Employees may also be eligible

to receive an annual bonus, as applicable.
