DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

Risk and Safety Services (RSS) serves the campus by leading and coordinating multidisciplinary services to sustain a safe and healthy campus through managing risk, preventing injury and loss, and coordinating access, emergency response, and recovery. Performing these critical functions requires a broad spectrum of business and financial support to all RSS units that successfully manage a combined budget of over $28 million with over 250 employees. Risk and Safety Services units include the following operations: ● AVC Risk & Safety Services Administrative Office ● Environmental Health and Safety ● Risk Services ● Transportation and Parking Services ● University Police and Public Safety ● Office of Emergency Services (OES)

 

JOB SUMMARY

Campus Safety Ambassadors protect and guard University property; maintain order among the public and UCSC community; monitor and control entry to restricted areas; inspect areas to prevent fires, accidents, and other hazards; direct visitors and answer questions concerning building and/or exhibit layouts; and perform other related duties as required. Under the supervision of the Campus Security Manager the Campus Safety Ambassadors are responsible for ensuring community safety and security at their assigned locations. The Campus Safety Ambassadors are responsible for the safety and security of all residents, employees, families, and campus visitors during their assigned shifts. The Campus Safety Ambassadors work closely with campus and non-campus emergency response personnel (University Campus Police Department, Santa Cruz Police Department, and Santa Cruz Fire Department). This is a non-scheduled provisional position with no guaranteed hours. Incumbents are offered work as shifts become available or per department need.

 

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $25.27/hour
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

90% - Security and Patrol

  • Protect and guard University property and make inspection rounds on foot and in vehicle in assigned areas to prevent hazards such as fire, theft, accidents and trespass and guard against security violations, infractions and other irregularities; check doors, windows and lock to insure they are properly secured during daily rounds; check for breakage, and report to UCSC Police and /or the appropriate authority as necessary.
  • Patrol Designated areas and radio or phone UCSC Dispatch to advise of suspicious or criminal activity, or life threatening circumstances.
  • Ensure assigned property is secure and notify law enforcement on suspicious activity.
  • Serve as a communication link between the campus and University Police
  • Provide safety and security to the UCSC community including students, staff, faculty and visitors by deterring crime.
  • Monitor building alarm systems (fire, safety, temperature, etc.) and notify the appropriate fire, police, building or specified client authorities in the event of alarm activations.
     

10% - Administrative and Other Duties 

  • Complete all logs, as required, for each shift worked.
  • Monitor and respond to to emails daily.
  • Prepare incident reports for immediate supervisor
  • Participate in regular drills and practice sessions for fire, earthquake evacuation , first aid, CPR, AED and other emergency situations.
  • Maintain familiarity with all posted notices or other official communications regarding security issues or problems for assigned areas.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or GED or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Skilled in interacting diplomatically with the public in a high volume, continuous public contact setting. Skilled in speaking and interacting with persons of various social, cultural, and economic and educational backgrounds to exchange information. Ability to deal professionally with the public.
  • Ability to learn, understand and apply working knowledge of UCSC's Police Department organizational structure.
  • Working knowledge of radio codes and language in order to use and understand the police radio.
  • Ability to assess a problematic or emergency situation and plan/execute an appropriate solution in a quick manner. Ability to hear and see to identify life threatening or criminal circumstances and communicate that information over a two-way police radio. Skilled in recognizing an emergency situation and taking appropriate action.
  • Skilled in using available resources in order to solve problems. Ability to independently resolve issues working within a set of policies and procedures.
  • Ability to clearly and concisely express ideas using appropriate English vocabulary and grammar in writing. Ability to relay information, in writing, in a professional manner, in order to write reports or relay information to the public or to the organization and its representatives.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current CPR certification
  • Basic First Aid certification
  • Guard Card certification

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
  • Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
  • Ability to walk multiple nightly rounds on uneven surfaces and repeatedly climb stairs.
  • Ability to perform essential physical job functions.
  • Ability to perform work in a rugged physical environment and inclement weather with challenging infrastructure requirements.
  • Ability to safely perform the physical requirements necessary to move light to moderate objects up to 60 lbs., with or without accommodation.
  • The selected candidate will be required to work all scheduled hours on-site.
  • Ability to work a variable schedule including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as directed.
  • Ability to work on-call.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
  • Clery Act: This position has been identified as a Campus Security Authority (CSA); required to report crimes, incidents, and disciplinary referral statistics as required by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (20 USC § 1092(f)).
  • Will be required to wear a University provided uniform.
