The University of California's Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) is a statewide organization that delivers science-based information to address California's most pressing challenges. UC ANR Publications, the publishing arm of UC ANR, is responsible for the editing and graphic design of peer-reviewed materials produced by UC academics, UCCE personnel, and others. These publications are intended to benefit stakeholders in California's agriculture, natural resources, youth development and community nutrition sectors as well as the wider California population. Some publications appear in printed form and others appear online. Many are available under an Open Access license, ensuring that UC research directly supports the communities it serves.

 

Position Summary:

This position involves planning, scheduling, and coordinating the printed and / or electronic production of books, journals, catalogs, publications, manuscripts, promotional and other materials. Confers with writer / editors, communications design specialists, web programming specialists, project directors, authors and related staff in the preparation of proposed publications; verifies that format of copy conforms to printing and / or electronic publishing specifications.

 

This position is a career appointment that is 100% fixed.

 

The home department for this position is Publishing & Production. While this position normally is based at 2801 Second Street, Davis, CA, this position is eligible for hybrid flexible work arrangements, for applicants living in the State of California, at this time. Please note that hybrid flexible work arrangements are subject to change by the University. 

 

Pay Scale: $59,000/year to $81,200/year

Key Responsibilities:

40%

Production Management 

◦ Manage and monitor all production schedules to ensure on-time content delivery for print and digital products, supporting revenue targets 

◦ Clearly communicate project status updates at every stage to internal stakeholders 

◦ Supervise a team of two designers, providing feedback, training, workload management, participates in the selection, development, and evaluation of staff 

◦ Set schedules and enforce production timelines to meet publication deadlines 

◦ Monitor and manage production budgets to control costs 

◦ Ensure all production activities meet UC ANR and ADA compliance requirements

40%

Print/Digital Production & Inventory Management 

◦ Oversee print production with external vendors across formats (print, ebooks, online)

◦ Manage inventory levels and reprint orders in coordination with Marketing Director 

◦ Administer the print-on-demand (POD) program for publications

20%

Process Improvement & Coordination. Under general supervision of the Director of Publishing: 

◦ Implement, document and optimize procedures/workflows for maximum efficiency and cost benefits 

◦ Identify opportunities to improve content offerings both in print and online 

◦ Participate in vendor evaluations and requests for proposals (RFPs) as needed 

◦ Coordinate cross-functionally with Editorial, Marketing and other teams 

◦ Monitor industry Best Practices and innovations, advise and ensure that all ANR Pubs meet required standards

 

Requirements:

  • High school diploma and / or equivalent certification / experience / training.
  • Progressive experience in a scholarly, public policy or non-profit publishing production role.
  • Demonstrated experience with print production, electronic publishing and file prep.
  • Familiarity with design principles and layout for different publication formats.
  • Demonstrated understanding of pub tech, including metadata standards, e-book composition.
  • Demonstrated project management skills, prioritization, successful management of deadlines
  • Creative problem solving and sound judgement.
  • Demonstrated sound relationships with vendors, freelancers, and other third-party suppliers.
  • Excellent IT skills including familiarity with Adobe Suite, and workflow management systems.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal to all levels of employees.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with journals publishing in print and online.
  • Solid supervisory skills, to include organization, scheduling, assigning work and ensuring quality standards are met.
  • Strong skills in customer service measurement and monitoring; ensures staff meet or exceed customer expectations.
  • Strong customer and client management skills.

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Must possess valid California Driver's License to drive a County or University vehicle. Ability and means to travel on a flexible schedule as needed, proof of liability damage insurance on vehicle used is required. Reimbursement of job-related travel will be reimbursed according to University policies.
