Position Summary:

  Under general supervision, the position performs comprehensive lab safety inspections to ensure compliance with Federal, State, and local regulations serve as the campus Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Coordinator. The primary duties of the job are to identify and evaluates a wide variety of potential hazards in the workplace and to coordinate the distribution of research-based PPE (i.e., lab coats, safety eye protection, and other personal protective equipment) to campus, including to research laboratories and non-academic departments, and to perform laboratory safety inspections. The position is responsible for training users about safety issues related to personal protective equipment and performing routine and impromptu audits of PPE use and practices to ensure appropriate procedures are followed. Work is reviewed for sound technical judgment and following the defined policies and procedures. Applies professional-level knowledge of the subject, including a complete understanding of a specialty area within a single academic/occupational academic/occupational discipline. Decision-making considers established procedures, relevant laws, regulations and organization policy, communication/outreach, and impact on other EH&S programs.

Required:  
  • Two years experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Solid, comprehensive working knowledge / understanding of a specific EH&S field including related laws and regulations, and general understanding of all EH&S fields. 
  • Solid organizational skills to plan, organize, and prioritize multiple projects. 
  • Good written, verbal, and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively in a diverse environment. 
  • Working skills in the appropriate use of technology and relevant scientific equipment as required. 
  • Extensive familiarity with research laboratory procedures and demonstrated experience in a research laboratory environment. 
  • Demonstrated ability to design, develop, and present training programs to individuals and groups 
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills with the ability to deal effectively with people in a wide variety of job classifications including those willing to accept occupational health and safety ideas as well as those opposed.
     
Preferred:  
  • Prior experience working in Higher Education or a University environment 
  • Experience in lab safety program implementation
  Special Conditions Required:
 
  • Must be able to wear PPE 
  • Must have a valid CA Driver's License and participate in the DMV pull-notice program 
  • May be required to work outside of regularly scheduled work shift.
