Engineering Undergraduate Office (EUO) has overall responsibility for the design, development, and implementation of administrative procedures for the degree-granting programs in College of Engineering (COE) as specified by the faculty, as well as outreach, recruitment, diversity, retention, and other student support activities. This includes the design and delivery of academic advising and educational enhancement programs for students; serving as a primary information resource for students, faculty, staff, and the general public; interpreting, analyzing, and implementing a wide variety of Academic Senate regulations and administrative policies in evaluating student petitions, assessing individual academic performance, and progress toward satisfaction of degree requirements; making decisions on academic disqualification from and readmission to the University. The Engineering Undergraduate Office is responsible for analyzing and authorizing baccalaureate degree certification; assisting the undergraduate academic department programs with assessment efforts and coordination for ABET accreditation efforts; and consulting for and coordinating the operation of the faculty governance system of COE. EUO monitors the progress and advises a specific group of students from matriculation through graduation. The unit also creates and supports programs designed to increase persistence and retention among first generation and women undergraduates and those from traditionally under- represented backgrounds (LEADR and Avenue E programs). EUO has primary responsibility for creating strategy and managing implementation of all UG outreach and recruitment activities, as well as student-oriented events. The unit's scope of responsibility is college-wide, extending to the 8 academic departments administered by the college.


Job Summary

Reporting to the Engineering Undergraduate Office (EUO) Director of Advising and Policy in the Dean's Office, provide the full spectrum, comprehensive academic advising and support for undergraduate students in the College of Engineering (COE). Serve as an expert resource for and provide leadership to departmental academic advisors on university academic policy implementation guidelines; provide advice and guidance to the chairs and members of college faculty governance committees, and other campus units. Collaborate closely with appropriate personnel in other campus units. Ensure ongoing, individual, and holistic advising for students to develop a strong foundation for retention and academic success through graduation. Interpret and apply complex Academic Senate, College and Campus academic and administrative regulations and policies associated broadly with undergraduate education and advising. Make decisions in consultation with the Associate Dean and, when appropriate, other college faculty on course planning and scheduling, academic intervention, dismissal, readmission, schedule adjustments and other matters of similar import for undergraduate students; collaborate with the Associate Dean and Director in office planning and the development of office policies and procedures designed to optimize the delivery of advising and academic support services; represent the college at public forums and respond on behalf of the college to inquiries or complaints from the general public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Lifting Requirements: Up to 25 Pounds (Light); Lift boxes of student materials weighing up to 20 lbs., hand carts available for use.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

·       Work schedule is 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

·       Occasional evening and weekend work will be necessary to provide academic information, participate in workshops, attend meetings, programs, and other events related to the responsibilities of the position, and to represent the Dean's Office or act as liaison to various groups.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

·       Bachelor's degree in related area and /or equivalent experience / training

·       Professional experience advising students in a university setting.

·       Experience identifying and determining appropriate level of advising or referral services for individual students, providing immediate crisis counseling, triage, and referrals to students in academic, financial, or personal difficulty.

·       Experience with general curricular elements and structures (e.g., courses, units, prerequisites, majors, and minors) and pedagogical approaches at the college and university level.

·       Experience identifying and documenting patterns of student academic needs and to develop strategies and programs to successfully meet those needs.

·       Experience interpreting transcripts.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·       Knowledge of State and Federal Laws governing confidentiality of student records.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:   

·       Master's degree in counseling, social sciences, higher education leadership, or related field.

·       Experience working with and maintaining confidential information and materials.

·       Experience with University governance and administrative structures in a public university.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·       Oral communications skills to communicate clearly, effectively, and professionally in person and by telephone.

·       Organization and planning skills to set work priorities under multiple deadlines.
