Overview

Primary Purpose

The RN Transplant is a professional registered nurse and a designated member of the transplant team who provides comprehensive nursing care through skillful assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation in accordance with facility or department policies, procedures, and/or protocols under the supervision of the nursing leader. The RN works with patients and their families beginning with the evaluation and will continue through the transplant process. The RN assists in maintaining a safe work environment and performs all related job responsibilities in a safe manner. The RN maintains clinical and professional competency as appropriate to the population of patients served. A registered nurses practice is guided by the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements.

Major Responsibilities
  • Assures that required tests are completed and reviewed per transplant specific protocols.
  • Analyzes test results and diagnostic studies and develops a plan that prescribes strategies to obtain expected measurable outcomes.
  • Interprets eligibility criteria to identify high-risk recipients and donors; schedules appropriate consultations to ensure all health needs are met prior to transplant. Communicates eligibility with multidisciplinary team.
  • Identifies and communicates health related problems that may increase transplant related morbidity and mortality.
  • Coordinates procurement of donor cells/organs while complying with HIPPA standards
  • Participates in multidisciplinary team meetings to develop and implement a comprehensive plan of care.
  • Conducts ongoing evaluation of transplant recipients to include effectiveness of intervention and attainment of goals and outcomes.
  • Provides education pre- and post-transplant to recipients, donors, and caregivers through 1:1 consultations and group classes.
  • Seeks knowledge and competence that reflects current nursing practice and promotes futuristic thinking.
  • Assist in development of policies and procedures reflective to current practice/literature/accreditation standards.
  • Participate in committees, shared governance, or facility decision making activities, developing, and nurturing research to positively affect clinical outcomes and promotion.
  • Participates in quality and performance improvement activities.
  • Utilizes appropriate resources to plan, provide, and sustain evidence-based nursing services that are safe, effective, and fiscally responsible.
  • Promotes evidence-based practice for the Transplant Center treatment intervention.



Minimum Job Requirements


Education

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing required. BSN required. RN candidates for external hire or internal promotion without BSN must be enrolled in a BSN program upon hire/transfer date and must complete program within 3 years of enrollment in the program.
Certification / License
  • Current RN license or temporary license as a Registered Nurse Petitioner in the state in which you work and reside or if declaring a National License Compact (NLC) state as your primary state of residency, meet the licensure requirements in your home state; or for Non-National License Compact states, current RN license or temporary license as a Registered Nurse Petitioner required in the state where the RN works. CPR Certification required.
Work Experience 3 years nursing experience required

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Fast-paced clinic and inpatient setting. Involves standing, walking, and bending

Preferred Job Requirements


Education

Certification / License Ability to obtain and maintain the American Board of Transplant Coordination Certification (CCTC) preferred, required within two years of employment. Experience
  • 5 years nursing experience including critical/acute care preferred, and experience in at least one of the following: end stage organ disease, solid organ transplantation, hematology, and/or blood and marrow transplantation preferred.
  • Previous management experience preferred


Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

Leadership skills demonstrated by an increase of responsibilities which may include working in the role of charge nurse, preceptor, administration, or participation in professional organizations/committees preferred.
