DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:

The spiritual care department respects and provides for each patients' rights to pastoral counseling. The spiritual care department includes being available 24 hours a day to support patients, families, and staff regardless of their faith or denominations.  

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The chaplain or spiritual care counselor mission is to assist with the spiritual and emotional wellbeing of our patients, families and staff focusing on the needs of the whole person (Body, Mind and Spirit).

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Graduate or bachelor's degree preferred
  • One-year pastoral or counseling experience in healthcare setting preferred
  • Current Ohio Drivers license in good standing
  • Must have own transportation
  • 4 units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) preferred

RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS

  • Daily rounds and answering referrals from patients, families, and staff
  • Assesses the spiritual status of the patient, family, and caregiver

Completes patient documentation in the appropriate electronic medical record

  • Participate in Strength for the Journey for employees and clergy
  • Assist with funerals, weddings, baptisms, protestant communion and other sacraments as requested from patients or families  
  • Assist with annual employee memorial service for employees, physician, veterans
  • Host special occasion prayer services along with praying for prayer requests from the prayer boxes
  • Creates and fosters a work environment that is consistent with the Mission, Vision and Values of the Aultman Health Foundation
  • Abides by the Aultman Code of Conduct
  • Completes annual competency requirements
  • Consistently communicates requests, suggestions, concerns, or problems to the appropriate personnel
  • Consistently completes assigned responsibilities in required time frame and accepts additional duties and responsibilities as requested by Unit Director
  • Protects patient health information according to HIPPA Privacy Rule and related Aultman policies
  • Demonstrates flexibility in meeting the needs of the program and responds positively to changes in workflow
  • Promotes teamwork by demonstrating willingness to assist others in meeting the needs of all individuals and collaborating effectively with the interdisciplinary team and other departments throughout the organization
  • Complies with agency infection control and safety policies
  • Communicates with and supports the involvement of local clergy and/or spiritual counselors as possible and as desired by the patient, family, and caregiver
  • Displays a positive and professional image and attitude in all relationships with patients, families, peers and in the community

Hospital Specific Responsibilities

  • Assist with codes, traumas, and end of life care
  • Present spiritual care at new nurse orientation
  • Assist with employee functions for the hospital and the community
  • Assist with new clergy badge process

Hospital and Palliative Specific Responsibilities

  • Documents the spiritual assessment, goals for spiritual care, services provided and the patient's and family's response to spiritual care
  • Acknowledges and respects the patient's and family's beliefs, culture and values related to    life's meaning including suffering and loss and desire for service/support
  • Interventions may include meditation, counseling, prayer, sacred rituals or practices, active listening, and supportive presence
  • Communicates with and supports the involvement of local clergy and/or spiritual counselors as possible and as desired by the patient, family, and caregiver.
  • Participates with the interdisciplinary team in the development and implementation of the patient's and family's plan of care
  • Consults with and provides education to the interdisciplinary team members and patients and families about spirituality and related care and services
  • Participates in volunteer training, bereavement services, annual memorial service and community education as requested
  • Displays a positive and professional image and attitude in all relationships with patients, families, peers and in the community
  • Participates in the Quality Assessment Performance Improvement (QAPI) program

SKILLS

  • Excellent interpersonal and oral/written communication skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Works well with coworkers

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Hours of operation with days assigned with rotating on call coverage (evenings and weekends)
  • Lunch periods and breaks are coordinated with other staff members to maintain adequate patient and family needs
  • Cross training to all areas in the department is required.
  • On call coverage is assigned to cover department schedule.
  • Staff may be assigned to different locations within the foundation.
  • Travel within a 30-mile radius is required.
