Summary of Position: 

The Patient Safety Specialist RN supports the organizational Patient Safety Program.

Qualifications

Education:

● Completion of an accredited nursing program required

● Bachelor's degree in healthcare related field required

Experience:

● Minimum of five years professional level, or greater, healthcare experience required

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

● Excellent critical thinking, data analysis, team building, and leadership change management skills preferred

● Sufficient computer skills as are required to complete an online application and the pre-employment/annual learning requirements

● In compliance with patient safety standards, must be able to effectively communicate in English; Bilingual abilities preferred

Certifications/Licensure:

● Current California RN licensure or ability to obtain prior to start date

● Current CPR/BLS certification by the American Heart Association (BLS for the Healthcare Provider) or proof of enrollment in an upcoming course

● Contact with patients and guests under a wide variety of circumstances.

Essential Functions

1. Provides consistently exceptional care at all times.

2. Supports the organizational Patient Safety program.  

3. Reviews the safety learning system (event reporting) and analyzes entries to address patient safety concerns and identify trends. Actively engages in interprofessional collaboration with involved teams and/or departments while supporting a non-punitive error reporting environment through Just Culture.

4. Participates in RCA/PI activities, collaboratively develops goals and objectives with the team, accurately prepares and reports activities and findings to appropriate committees, educates staff in RCA/PI methodology and promotes participation by all staff, supports a Just Culture and non-punitive environment.

5. Actively rounds with internal and external customers across the healthcare organization, identifies patient safety culture concerns, observes for hazard risk reduction opportunities, provides service recovery.

6. Assesses and documents compliance with Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals and other regulatory requirements while working collaboratively with department leaders to ensure compliance through process revisions, new processes, education, audits and/or reporting.

7. Uses evidence-based patient safety methodology to support, develop, and implement initiatives across the organization in conjunction with the Director of Patient Safety.

8. Provides leadership through collaboration with internal and external customers to further the culture of safety. 

9. Supports the regulatory survey and survey preparation process. 

10. Assists with planning and executing Patient Safety department activities including external agency data submission.

11. Responds to the needs of the department by performing other duties, as necessary.
