Position Summary  

The Dean of Student Support is an exempt position that works under administrative direction and reports to the Vice President of Student Affairs. This position develops, monitors and promotes student success strategies and programs to increase persistence, retention and academic success for all students, with an emphasis on closing the equity gap in success and persistence for undeserved student populations using the social justice framework.
 
The Dean serves as a member of the Student Affairs Leadership Team and works collaboratively with other campus constituencies, including faculty, staff, and student groups, to help the college achieve its goals for student retention, success and completion. In addition, this position also provides¿support to the¿Behavioral Intervention Team and the Academic Standards Policy.

The Dean analyzes and evaluates operations, and develops and implements corrective action to resolve problems, in addition to development and implementation of short and long-range plans to meet unit/program needs. This position also has responsibility for providing leadership for college planning and implementation of a comprehensive retention plan in collaboration with¿Academic Affairs.

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule  

Position Salary Range: $110,530/year - $165,795/year

The salary information shown above is a general guideline only. The salary will be determined based on candidate's qualifications and related experience, as well as market and business considerations. Typically, new hire starts no higher than $124,346/year based on Bellevue College Exempt salary schedule.

The employee is scheduled to work 40 hours per workweek. This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act, which means that you are not eligible for overtime pay.

About the Department  

The Dean of Student Support is responsible for a number of departments within the Student Affairs Division. Departments include Academic Advising, Counseling, Student Success and Retention, Benefits Hub, Veteran¿s Resource Center, Workforce Education Program, Disability Resource Center, Multicultural Services and TRiO. Each of these areas provides support to specific populations from general student advising to supporting students of color and other marginalized populations.

Essential Functions  

Operations

  • Provide oversight and support for the operations of all areas of responsibility. 
  • Evaluate operations to ensure that all areas operate effectively, efficiently and are compliant with college policies and relevant federal, and state laws and regulations.  
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures for all areas of responsibility as needed or required. 
  • Oversee development of annual and quarterly Human Development course schedules to optimize efficiencies and fulfill student need. 
  • Provide leadership, oversight, and support for curriculum in Human Development division.  
  • Work with the grants officer to identify and apply for grant funding to support student success.  
  • Act as budget authority and provide budget oversight for all areas of responsibility, including monitoring federal and state grants and ensuring compliance of grant rules and regulations.

Supervision

  • Establish an expectation¿and culture¿that all employees use¿a¿direct transformational service model when working with students and other visitors within¿areas of responsibility,¿in person, on the phone, via email, or when using other technology related to communication, and provide training as needed.  
  • Build an¿effective¿leadership¿team that is results driven and characterized by collaboration,¿cooperation, and trust.  
  • Supervise designated exempt, faculty and classified staff.  
  • Select and hire staff, make recommendations for disciplinary action, approve/deny leave requests, evaluate employee performance yearly, resolve grievances in consultation with HR, establish office expectations, and take corrective action.  Responsible for hiring, tenure process and evaluations of faculty positions. 
  • Provide administrative oversight over the Counseling department instructional classes, including class assignments, management annual and quarterly course scheduling and faculty workload. 
  • Provide feedback, instruction, encouragement, and resource support¿to staff to enable continuous improvement and to promote optimum job performance.¿This includes
  • Professional Development opportunities to ensure proper training.  
  • Implement change management strategies for promoting or implementing new initiatives or strategies that affect the workplace environment.  

Social Justice

  • Create a safe, bias-free working environment, which engenders respect for differences.  
  • Work to achieve the core theme of fostering a diverse college community as established by the College.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to lead programming and services to serve students. 
  • Lead the Associate Dean of Student Equity and Success in the creation and implementation of a Student Equity Plan. 
  • Focus on serving distinct student populations to reduce/eliminate the achievement gap for students of color and other vulnerable populations.

Leadership and Participation

  • Serve as a member of the Student Affairs Leadership Team.
  • Actively support and inform the Office of the Vice President of Student Affairs.
  • Support the Student Affairs Strategic Plan through development of initiatives with the Leadership¿Team, and¿meet all deliverables as required.
  • Work collaboratively with Instructional leadership regarding Counseling faculty and the Counseling instructional offerings.
  • Under the direction of the Vice President, participate with the Student Affairs Leadership Team in the development of the budget, and prioritize needs based on the Division as a whole.
  • Develop and maintain strategic partnerships with local agencies and organizations in supporting student success.
  • Provide leadership in accordance with the Mission and Vision established by the College, furthering Core Themes and College Objectives.
  • Serve as chair or member of other campus committees or initiatives as needed or required.

Conflict Resolution

  • Meet with students, their¿families, staff, faculty and administrators¿to¿address and resolve¿a variety of issues related to¿areas of responsibility.   
  • Construct, develop and implement a coordinated response and solution to issues and other difficulties that impact areas of responsibility and the campus for students, faculty, staff and campus administrators as requested.
  • Keep the Vice President informed of serious concerns or complaints.  

Other

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications  
  • Master's Degree in Counseling, Student Development, Student Personnel Administration or related field of study. Relevant work experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-by-year basis.
  • Five (5) years of management and leadership experience in student services, or related administrative position in higher education.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills including significant responsibility for program, personnel, and budget management.
  • Experience supervising staff and faculty within a higher education institution.
  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to sustaining diversity initiatives.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Effective organization skills.
  • Intermediate Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a part of an administrative team and foster a team environment of collaboration, collegiality and cooperation.
Preferred Qualifications  
  • Experience supervising two (2) or more functional areas.
  • Experience working with and supervising tenured and tenure track faculty counselors.
  • Community College administrative experience.
  • Working knowledge of¿leading-edge retention and student success initiatives.
  • Demonstrated experience of working with marginalized and undeserved student populations.
  • Experience in engaging and working with instructional deans and faculty on issues of student success and retention.
  • Understanding of the educational role and philosophy of the open enrollment (community) college.
