Description

Job Description:

The Associate Dean & Associate Director plays a critical role in cultivating an inclusive and welcoming campus community by providing developmental advising and case management support services to Brown University undergraduate and graduate students. This position supports the effort of SSS in the University's management of high-impact, complex student situations, in which students may be experiencing significant disruption to a normal course of academic study due to the presence of psychiatric, behavioral, and/or mental-health related issues, and/or present with behavior that may be worrisome to others and disruptive to University business or community stability. A crucial function of SSS, and this role, is to ensure students of concern are connected to resources, appropriate levels of care, and receive non-clinical case management support. In addition, this position provides case management services to students whose disruption to academic progress is caused by a broad range of difficulties that may, at any point, rise to higher levels of concern if not moderated quickly and sufficiently, for example: unique financial concerns, severe/disruptive interpersonal difficulties, markedly difficult adjustments and transitions, or difficulty navigating complex healthcare systems.

The Associate Dean & Associate Director manages individual student cases that include medical leaves and return clearances, reduced course loads, students in crisis, missing students, and other student emergencies. This position provides support to students in crisis as well as coordinating with other offices to ensure appropriate resources are deployed. This position actively promotes diversity and social justice through critical conversations, compassionate care, and strategic outreach efforts to various student populations (e.g., first-generation, undocumented and DACA students, students of color, international students, LGBTQ students). As Associate Director, this staff member serves as a leader in Student Support Services, offering training, mentoring and consultation to other team members and managing office processes and protocols. This position also serves as the primary point of contact for the department when the Director is unavailable. Specifically, in the Director's absence, the Associate Director is the primary contact on all graduate and undergraduate student issues, concerns, and consultations.  The Associate Dean & Associate Director also serves in the Administrator on Call (AOC) Tier 2 rotation to support students in crisis as well as coordinate with other offices to ensure appropriate resources are deployed. The portfolio of this position includes direct supervision of the Administrative Coordinator.

 Job Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Student Affairs, Education, Social Work, or related field required.

  • 8-10 years of relevant experience at an educational institution required. Residential college or university preferred.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, colleagues, and families to advise and support undergraduate, graduate, and medical students through difficult and complicated situations.

  • Experience in managing crises effectively and collaboratively.

  • Possess a willingness and ability to support and promote a diverse and inclusive campus community.

  • Experience mentoring and training other staff members.

  • Demonstrated commitment and success working in a multicultural environment with a critical understanding of social justice issues in both student and workplace settings.

  • Sound judgment and the ability to make difficult and timely decisions with integrity.

  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.

  • Ability to utilize technology and institutional databases in the documentation of records and support of students.

  • Flexibility to evolve with a dynamic student affairs environment.

  • Experience with assessment strategies used within a student affairs program.

  • Energy, enthusiasm, and a sense of humor.
