Job Description:

The Research Assistant will coordinate experiments in the area of protein biochemistry and molecular and cell biology aimed at understanding the basic function of the LINE-1 transposon, its potential contributions to cancer development and aging, and support and develop small molecules and genetic strategies to target and modulate the pathway. The Research Assistant will work with the PI and laboratory members in experiments involving protein purification, assays, as well as general molecular biology procedures and bacterial and eukaryotic cell culture, and may work in development of novel assays and optimization. The Research Assistant will also be involved in basic laboratory support.

The primary purpose of this position is to help the lab make progress toward its research goals. The Research Assistant will work closely with other staff (research assistants, postdocs, graduate students) to assist with experiments. The Research Assistant will help perform experiments according to established laboratory protocols, and will provide technical assistance, as instructed, toward the development of new procedures. The ideal applicant will be interested in developing independent projects (under the direction of the PI) and supporting other projects in the laboratory.

The goals of the laboratory are to study the basic function and mechanisms of the LINE-1 transposon, their contributions to human disease, and to leverage this knowledge into novel diagnostics and therapies.

This is fixed term position with a current end date of 7/31/2027, which may be extended based upon available funding.

Education and Experience

  • Required: Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, or related area of science

  • Required: Prior related experience or extensive coursework (Grade 7)

  • Required: 1-2 years of experience required with laboratory approaches and techniques in areas such as protein biochemistry, molecular biology, biophysics, and analytical biochemistry or related area (Grade 8)

  • Or equivalent combination or education and experience

  • Previous experience with one or more of protein biochemistry, protein purification, assay development or troubleshooting, and/or basic molecular biology techniques such as bacterial culture and molecular biology techniques such as PCR and molecular cloning is a plus.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills: The person in this position frequently communicates to faculty and staff who inquire about their research. Must be able to exchange accurate information.

  • Ability to present complex data in clear presentations

  • Proficiency with computers and essential software programs (e.g. MS office, Google Suite, etc.)

  • Ability to collect and analyze data

  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with a diverse group of people, with vastly different skills and training

  • Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive campus community
