JOB PURPOSE

The Deputy Director is a member of the Education Leadership team who reports to and supports the State Director (SD) to drive the excellence of our K-12 network of schools' academic performance, operations, educational programs and CSUSA's core educational strategies. The Deputy Director supervises, with oversight from the SD, all regional operations personnel within their assigned state/region.

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Deputy Director will support and coach principals and leadership in areas such as curriculum and instruction, accountability and assessment, and further support school improvement within their assigned portfolio as well as work collaboratively with the State Director (SD) in order to implement our premier educational model focused on data-driven instruction and student achievement. The Deputy Director will create a culture of constant improvement and serve as inspirational leaders, committed to educational and operational excellence and attaining the highest student performance and growth outcomes. The Deputy Director will assist the SD in providing guidance and support to the state team and regional staff and help them reach high levels of achievement. Under the leadership of the SD, the Deputy Director will work with the state team, regional team, and the national team to develop systems and processes that meet the needs of the specific area. The SD and the Deputy Director will work to create a culture of performance results, accountability and excellence within each area within the state. The Deputy Director will be knowledgeable of their state specific Department of Education (DOE) policies and procedures in all academic areas, school operations, mandated State reports, teacher and principal evaluations and accountability frameworks that determine school performance. The Deputy Directory shall also be knowledgeable of federal statutes that impact academic programs and services within their assigned state as well as support operations, strategic development and further support school improvement within their assigned state.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Teaching and Learning

  • Uses existing data appropriately to diagnose and assess school needs.
  • Increases schools' capacity to seek, critically assess, and selectively incorporate new ideas and practices.
  • Facilitates implementing changes in legislation regarding school improvement.
  • Guides schools in tailoring instruction to meet individual needs.
  • Collaborates in creating Professional Learning Communities and Learning Team Meetings / Lesson Study Groups at the school level.
  • Develops the capacity of school principals to monitor and improve instruction.
  • Monitors the implementation of instructional programming, digital, and blended learning customized to the individual strengths, needs, and aspirations of each learner.
  • Monitors the implementation of effective instruction to meet the needs of all students.
  • Monitors the implementation of the Education Model 2.0 within all schools.
  • Assists school administrators in using a variety of walk-through templates to help Leadership Teams assess and evaluate how the faculty prepares students for purposeful learning.
  • Coaches school leadership teams on improving classroom instruction.
  • Leads strategic change that continuously elevates the performance of schools and sustains high quality educational programs and opportunities across the Organization.
  • Continually assesses and evaluates progress and growth at the school level.
  • Directs schools in effectively using data to make adjustments to instruction and informed school improvement decisions.

Talent Development

  • Builds schools' capacity to support school improvement.
  • Provides coaching, support, and professional learning strategies school principals' and leadership teams to grow as instructional leaders.
  • Engages school principals in the principal evaluation process in ways that facilitate their growth as instructional leaders.
  • Guides the organization in designing both principal coaching or mentoring and teacher instructional coaching to address meaningful goals for student learning.
  • Creates expectations and support to schools within the state.
  • Monitors and ensures rigor in the selection, hiring, and retention processes used to identify highly qualified and effective employees.
  • Engages in self-development and continuous improvement to facilitate school principals' and leadership teams in growth as instructional leaders.
  • Provides training on data analysis and curriculum alignment.
  • Identifies effective, long lasting professional development that will act as a change lever and ensures professional development is intensive, targeted, ongoing and embedded.
  • Works with school principals' and instructional leaders to overcome the barriers to change (e.g., structures, skills, systems, supervisors).
  • Supervises and evaluates performance of assigned school principals as well as provides input into the evaluation of instructional team members.
  • Implements and monitors leadership advancement pathways.
  • Directs, oversees and evaluates each principal's performance in terms of the school's productivity in achieving CSUSA strategic goals.
  • Works with principals and teachers in his/her portfolio to identify expertise and support services necessary for staff development to meet their identified needs.
  • Responsible for maintaining timely and accurate information and accountable for the quality of information maintained by those they supervise.

Customer Service Culture

  • Facilitates shaping and changing the prevailing culture in schools.
  • Builds a culture of pride, trust, and respect.
  • Monitors an effective approach to bullying prevention.
  • Aligns new and existing community and parent partnerships for the state.
  • Helps schools, parents, students, teachers, and the community make critical use of data with the end result being improved school-wide cultures.
  • Keeps State Director informed of critical issues and incidents.
  • Develops collegial relationships within the organization and works collaboratively with other area directors.
  • Monitors systemic customer service in the schools.
  • Manifests a professional code of ethics and values.
  • Responds to internal and external customers in a timely, accurate, courteous and empathetic manner representing CSUSA in a positive light.
  • Keeps the State Director informed of current state-wide issues and incidents about which he/she and the Board should be aware.

 

Operational Excellence

  • Implements rigorous project management, structures, protocols, and processes.
  • Models the routine, intentional and effective use of technology in daily work, including communications, organization and management tasks.
  • Oversees and manages all operations and functions of the schools in his/her portfolio consistent with organizational goals.
  • Maintains visibility in schools and community as the Deputy Director is responsible for the effective operation of the schools and the effectiveness of employees.
  • Follows the organizations policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for self-development and keeping up to date on current research, trends and best practices relevant to the area of responsibility.
  • Communicates and coordinates with LEA on deadlines and requirements due.
  • Maintains grant compliance and financial management.
  • Communicates directly and regularly with CSUSA schools implementing corrective action plans.
  • Maintains accountability-reporting schedule and communicate requirements to functional areas and schools.
  • Communicates with key stakeholders effectively on accountability issues.
  • Supports new operational and educational solutions and innovation in the organization.

 

Finance, Grants & HR

  • Ensure the region's financial health by maximizing regional resources and utilizing school budgets/grants to provide the highest quality education to our students first and foremost.
  • Works with the SD regarding school leadership that includes hiring, transferring, promotions, and terminations/retirement.
  • Leads professional development of regional team and education leadership, as assigned.
  • Assigns training, duties and projects to various team members.

 

IT

  • Oversee the region's IT services to ensure the schools are properly outfitted with the technology needed to ensure our students' and staff's success.

 

Marketing & Enrollment

  • Coordinates and manages internal marketing and customer service (communication, red carpet training, even coordination, PTC oversight, school highlights to media, etc.).
  • Holds school leaders accountable for meeting regional enrollment targets.
  • Ensures schools are compliant with regional enrollment reporting and maximizing allowable funding.
  • Works with Enrollment Managers to track and monitor regional enrollment data.
  • Collaborates with marketing team to execute regional & school marketing strategies designed to build awareness and boost enrollment and retention.
  • Prepares a variety of regional reports, analysis and solutions to drive enrollment and retention.

 

Governance

  • Participates in pre-board calls for region.
  • Review and approve monthly principal board reports.
  • Follow up with new leaders after the pre-board call.
  • Attend and support regional CSUSA board meetings.

 

Facilities

  • Oversee the region's facilities' services to ensure the schools are maintained in such a way that encourages student learning and success.

 

Local Decision Making

  • Participates as needed in meetings with various departments, committees, boards, groups and parents about matters pertaining to the area.
  • Models collaborative planning and shared decision making.

Equity

  • Assists the State Director in ensuring that the schools in the state are culturally/socially responsive and have equitable access to resources necessary for the success of each student.
  • Uses evidence of school principals' effectiveness to determine necessary improvements in practice to foster a positive educational environment that supports the diverse cultural and learning needs of students.

Resource Optimization

  • Monitors and assists with the Florida Professional Development Evaluation Protocol (FPDEP).
  • Uses the power of strategizing rather than focusing upon one single strategy; seeks continual feedback, reshaping plans and working with changes as a process rather than a product.
  • Models the effective implementation of resource optimization including programmatic decisions based on program evaluation or return on investment.
  • Establishes expectations by setting ambitious enrollment targets for the area
  • Provides support and coaching to principals' and instructional team members on increasing enrollment and increasing the recommit rates.
  • Plans, organizes, implements and evaluates professional development necessary to support principals and teachers.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master's degree (MA) from an accredited college or university or equivalent.
  • 3-5 years related experience (in school administration) and /or training.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Student Information System (SIS), preparing reports and visual presentations.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Salary and benefits will be highly competitive and represent the performance and results orientation of our model. They shall be paid consistent with CSUSA salary and benefit policy. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by Charter Schools USA.

 

FLSA OVERTIME CATEGORY

The position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

 

EVALUATION

The performance will be evaluated in accordance with Charter Schools USA's policy.
