As a Certified Arborist I, you will be maintaining our Urban Forest with best practices in pruning, maintenance and plant health care. Some key responsibilities will be to: 

  • Ensure safety, structural development and health of trees by utilizing hand, power, hydraulic tools and aerial lift units
  • Ensure trees are free of broken, crossing/rubbing branches, dead/diseased wood and damaged wood 
  • Remove and/or pile branches and brush 
  • Provide proper clearances above roads and sidewalks, from traffic signs, streetlights, buildings and other trees 
  • "Train" trees to maintain a shape that is consistent with characteristics of its species 
  • Ensure sidewalk and street clearance as well as accommodating park settings 
  • Attend to storm-damaged trees (usually broken or split limbs) 
  • Remove of tree stakes as necessary 
  • Remove adventitious growth (water sprouts & suckers) as required 
  • Bolt, cable and brace in non-complex situations 
  • Thin tree crown to limit stress on the portion of trunk weakened by the cavity or an injury 
  • Perform surgeries by tracing damaged wood with a surgery knife rounding the margins 
  • Remove small and large trees following directions from Parks Leader and Arborist II 
  • Chip trees as required 
  • Know how to use chipping equipment safely and how to maintain chipping schedules 
  • Complete structural risk assessments 
  • Identify tree pests and diseases and identify tree health care issues in the early stages 
  • Work on public complaints (tree problems and concerns) and attend to tree work generated by requests/complaints
  • Other related duties as required
